Im not talking about dull X Factor/Pop Idol contenders copying run of the mill songs, what Im on about is real criminal offences of destroying good songs.
Unfortunately we dont do '3 strikes & out' here or
"Wherever I Lay My Hat"
"Love Of The Common People"
"Love Will Tear Us Apart"
Would have landed Paul Young in jail for he is the worst repeat offender I know of.

sorry folks but Hey Joe by Love is pretty damn bad, and the worst on that album by a long way
(edit, having thought about it - obviously there will be far worse out there, but that one sprang to mind instantly)

The La's 'There She Goes' destroyed by Sixpence Non The Richer. How on earth did they think they could better the best pop song ever written??

(Contentious there I know, but it's like perfume, smells different on everyone!!)

One from this summer - Gnarls Berkely murdering the Violent Femmes 'Gone Daddy Gone' when we'd watched the maestro's ON THE VERY SAME STAGE only the day before, ripping through a blistering version.

May I just say that I totally hate Joy Division and consider Paul Young's version of their song a 500% improvement!

That Rachid Taha's "Rock El Casbah" is pure quality, and sung in Arabic to boot!

I always look out (or should I say looked out) for interesting covers to put on the playlist at the pub.
There are even cover versions of the artists' own cover versions, for example PP Arnold's reggae version of her previous cover version of Cat Stevens's "First Cut is The Deepest" (welcome to the board Rod Stewart!)

How about:
Song to the Siren by Robert Plant, and again by Susheela Raman
I Love Paris by Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Sweet Home Alabama by the Leningrad Cowboys with the Red Army Choir
Redemption Song by that (dead) Guy who can't sing from the group with no tunes, the one that ADG likes
Black is the Colour by Paul Weller
Metallica's "the Unforgiven" by Apocalyptica (cello band)
The Jean Genie by Beverly Jo Scott
Because the Night by 10,000 Maniacs
Another Saturday night by Cat Stevens

Some lousy covers that are still criminal even though the some of the original versions were pretty crap too:

Celine Dion - All By Myself
Celine Dion - The Power of Love
Celine Dion - I Drove All Night
Celine Dion - The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face

See a pattern emerging?

It sounds weird but The Magic Numbers did an acoustic version of 'Crazy in Love' by Beyonce when I went to see them live last year. It was superb, by far the best song of the night. If you'd never heard the original you'd think it was a great song in it's own right.

I'm going to see 'em again in a few weeks, hopefully they'll do it again.

They are allowed to destroy "Oh L'Amour"...they wrote it!

Now you mention it I do seem to remember that.Still not a patch on Therese Bazaar singing it in her finest 'fuck me' voice

As for top quality covers theres the duet of 'Redemption Song' by Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer

Sorry, the Sterophonics are banned for being dog awful.
They also do cover versions of voices, hitting a spot somewhere between Bonnie Tyler and Rod Stewart.
Of all the spots to hit. Will somebody please give them some Vicks.

IMO covers fall into maybe four categories:

1) Pointless copies of songs that don't add anything much or just don't come near the original (any number of boy and girl bands, Westlife spring to mind)

2) Competent covers that while they don't add too much still work (For example I rather like The Proclaimers version of King of the Road)

3) Ones that try and be too radical/different and just sound daft (Liza Minelli's version of Twist in my Sobriety a classic example of this, it's loopy, also Scissor Sistors version of Comfotably Numb)

4) Ones that take on the original, do it different, and make it partly their own. White Stripes "I just don't know what to do with myself", but also add in others like The Who's version of "Summertime Blues" from Live at Leeds, Voice of the Beehive's "I think I love you".

Category 4 ones tend to be best IMO, but they're also the hardest to do as there's sometimes a fine line between 3 and 4.
