I don't mean those wanky clothes shops where you get sneered at by the assistants if you aren't wearing the right stuff, I mean ones where you are very unwelcome and right out of your depth.

You can forget about the 'local shop' off League of Gentlemen, by far the most harrowing retail experience I've ever had was when I was about 17, and I had to go to Edna Jones on Catcote Road.

My gran was ill and couldn't get out, so I said I would get some wool for her. She wrote down specifically what she needed so I thought it would be straight in and straight out.

Oh no. There was no natural daylight in there, and it was full of really hatchet-faced crones. It was impossible to tell who was working there and who was a customer. They all instantly scowled at me when I went in as if I was about to rob them, and you could have cut the tension in the air with a knife.

I told one of the hags what I was after, who looked at me like I had spoked to her in Urdu. Another one finally snatched the list out of my hand and then looked me up and down as if she was deciding whether or not to serve me.

After five minutes of rummaging, she got all the balls of wool together and virtually threw them at me. She did the same with my change (obviously very annoyed I didn't have the correct change). I couldn't get out quick enough.

Anyone else had to endure owt like that?

Edna Jones was definitely a front for some dodgy business or other. I remember those crones well.
Behind the scenes will have been a brothel or a money laundering organisation. You obviously didn't have the pass word

The duckie?

Was it in the pondie?

Or do you mean the little off licence on the corner of the pub?

I don't think you're being very sensitive to the feelings of victims of intimidating shops
