...polyglots, or translators, is there a word which exists in a language other than English which describes the following feeling:

A realisation that a situation you thought was going OK until you see a spanner in the works which makes your heart sink and snaps you out of a happy mood.

For example, when your boss is due to be out of the office all Friday, leaving you to go about your business in a relaxed manner, only for you to pitch up at work on the morning to see his car parked outside meaning he will be in the office all day. Not quite an 'oh shit' moment, but one of disappointment and annoyance at the same time.

If such a sinlge word exists to sum up that feeling, I reckon it will be in German. Something like 'ungemeindelschaft' or similar.

Interesting question. Do you mean the word has to be more precise than 'disappointment' or 'disillusionment'...which probably exist in most languages?
What does 'ungemeindelschaft' mean literally?

Not sure how the Nogs would phrase it. i'll ask tomorrow.

I was also thinking of deflated, but that doesn't really get the whole thing

I like the way Mr PIN has posed this knotty problem, and then vanished into thin air while we solve it for him

He 's probably sitting with his feet up, at this very minute, with a cup of tea and a piece of battenberg cake

I don't know, I made it up. I did have 'schadenfreude' in mind as an example of a one-word concept.

What I'm getting at is a kind of switch in your mood because you're expecting one thing, only to have your hopes dashed by the sight of something unexpected.

I think this may be one definition of the 'Gestalt' theory. But there isn't a word as far as I know to describe the sinking realisation of fucking typicalness.

Schadenfreude would only work if it was someone else who was receiving the aforesaid misfortune.
