Le 1er Régiment étranger (1er RE), est le plus ancien des régiments de la Légion étrangère.

Il est stationné au Quartier Viénot à Aubagne depuis 1962, date de son arrivée de Sidi-bel-Abbès.

Créé en 1831, il est le doyen des régiments de la Légion. Au delà de cet aspect historique, le 1er RE représente l'étape majeure dans le parcours du légionnaire. Il y débute sa carrière, au Centre de sélection et d'incorporation (CSI), et y accomplit ses formalités de départ.

Mais si aujourd'hui, c'est un régiment à vocation essentiellement administrative, il n'en a pas toujours été ainsi.
