If I was minded to move back to the North East I would not consider anywhere far from Hartlepool. Newcastle, Sunderland and M'Boro hold no interest for me whatsoever.

I would probably look at one of the outlying villages; Dalton Piercy, Elwick or maybe even Greatham. That said I don't really know if they are still as I remember them but if they were then that would be the place for me.

I thought you'd only just moved??

There's a big old Victorian place for sale next to the Staincliffe that looks tasty. Handy for keeping an eye on incoming and outgoing managers too.....

When I moved to Elwick in 1982 it was brilliant, with the McOrville Inn at the center as a real village forum. Then when Mr Warren died the pub reverted to a managed house and hardly anybody from the village went any more. The walks in the country were still nice, but there just didn't seem to be any kind of village community spirit after that. I tried to drum up interest for a village club but before I got anywhere I was assigned to a job overseas.
In the end I wasn't really too sad to leave.

Just before moving to Elwick, when I was looking for a new house, we looked just about everywhere in south east and south central Durham. To be honest, just about anywhere in that region would have done me. But definitely in a village. Maybe Bishopton or Sadberge. Perhaps even Hart though I've no idea what it's like today. I suppose Sedgefield wasn't that bad either.

Apparently Port Clarence is picking up a bit Mr Atweasle,a far cheaper option to Hartburn as well.

I wouldn't live anywhere but Hartlepool.

When we moved this year we looked at the village locations- Elwick, Hart, Dalton, Wynyard, Castle Eden etc- but in the end we decided that people who live in places like that would make Tubs and Edward look normal and that Royston Vasey life wasn't for us. Creeps, busybodies and just plain weirdo's live in villages.

When I lived in Elwick most of the people were down to earth. It was good craic. Pints all round, not Vod and Ton please Nigel. Darts, Dominoes, Three Card Brag and Tippit in the bar. Getting pissed and singing, all that.

To be honest the worst group of people were the farmers. The shifty bastads had a real "The Hills Have Eyes" mentality and were tight as a duck's arse to boot!

What's the flats like down the docks? Somewhere like Mariner's Point. I've lived a long time in West and wonder what it would be like to be right next to the sea.

if I didn't live in the town, I wouldn't much like living anywhere else in the North East really.

I moved back to the North East after eleven years away and chose Seaton Sluice. Had never actually heard of it at the time but left London and wanted to be near a big city but also near to Northumberland and its coastline. Plus, my lass studied to be a nurse in Newcastle and went on holiday to Northumberland every year as a kid.
I'm perfectly happy here and wouldnt move anywhere else at all. Dodgy name, lovely place. Little harbour with fishing boats, cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, dene with wood - great for kids, walking dog etc. Five pubs, good community. 50 minutes from Hartlepool is a bit far sometimes and I'd like to be nearer Hpool mates but compared to London, Greece and Israel its well near.

Wasn't it Seaton Sluice that Ray Kennedy had his pub?

Went up there on a bus trip from Pools, when he was playing for us. A real gentleman, got his box of medals out from his days with Arsenal and Liverpool. Only passed one around at a time, obviously having dealt with Scousers for years was wary of one of us slipping one into a back pocket.

He was diagnosed as having Parkinsons Disease around that time, and has since had to sell those medals to keep himself, in his retirement in ill health.

Could be - though may well be Seaton Delaval - inland about half a mile. If it was by the sea it was the Sluice. I've only been here six years. Ray is from New Hartley which is inbetween the Sluice and Delaval.
