After the balls up in Moscow, I just could not contemplate us not competing in the finals next summer (is that arrogance?). I really would not have bothered watching the tournament at all, particularly if the 'sweaties' had qualified ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha or as they say 'oh me ribs' rolfl

Lets hope we don't fook it up on wednesday................................

The irony that has been missed is that if Russia had have won, England would still qualify by beating Croatia because Macedonia beat Croatia tonight.

Croatia will definately be happy with a draw, we can't not qualify, can we .............................

Must say, I can't believe the amount of people who dont like watching England. I've already said, but I cant imagine a World Cup/Euro championships tournament during the summer without England taking part.

I couldn't give a shit. I hope we don't pass through to be honest, it's about time the England national squad had a shake up. No more players chosen on past glories, less overpaid idiots, etc etc

I agree and disagree.

I am English (I assume you are)? And I would never wish England not to qualify for a major tournament. I understand your frustration with McClaren but would us not qualifying really make the FA sack him and bring someone in who's going to have the balls to ditch the overpaid premier league players and maybe look into the championship?
I don't think so. There has been plenty of opportunities for past managers to look at players outside the Premier league, but this just hasn't been done.

I am indeed English.

I'm just sick of seeing what is, on paper, a top team in the world, and we scrape through to the quarters (JUST). We nearly lost to Macedonia, Ecuador and Trinidad + Tobago in the last couple of years. We actually lost to Northern Ireland and the German B-team.

The likes of Micah Richards and Wright-Phillips give me hope. Lampard, Gerrard, Terry, Cole, Cole, Ferdinand, Rooney, every goalkeeper, Owen, Beckham, etc etc don't live up to their names. Gerrard and Terry are okay half of the time but it's just dire - they don't seem to try.

Nobody's saying look to the Championship. We already have other talents in the Premiership who would give 100% at international level just for getting the chance to. Agbonlahor, Young, Johnson, Walcott, players like that. I say name a brand new starting 11 and see how they do. I reckon the outcome would be much better.

Yeah, these so called big names don't live up to expectations.
The problem we have now though is that if we do qualify we are going to take the same team to the finals who just scraped through the qualifiers. I don't believe they will get anywhere near the quarter finals if they play the way they have been. But will McClaren pick a different squad to take with the though of a chance of winning or will he just leave it as it is knowing there's no chance of winning at all.
I know he's not going to come out and say in public that there's no chance of us winning, and maybe he even thinks we can win with the current squad, but my opinion is that big changes do need to be made. I'd like to see him take that risk.
Unfortunately i'm 99% certain he will take the exact same squad. Lets just hope at least a handful of changes are made.

Beckham with the Greece game, Gerrard with the one man show he put on with Liverpool, Lampard for screaming free kicks and Rooney being Rooney.

It hasn't been like that for ages though, has it?

This is why I don't blame Sven for taking Walcott to the finals in Germany - at least he was prepared to take a chance. Sadly he didn't use it and that was his own fault. There are plenty of competent English strikers - Crouch is having a revival, and good for him - but you're completely right.

If the players are blaming themselves ahead of McClaren, and McClaren's head is on the chopping block, why are these players not susceptible to the same fate? We should drop them for good instead.

i tried, i honestly did, to sit through england vs austria last night and ended up switching over to the egg chasing after half an hour.

dunno if anyone else saw it but after the shite that preceded it, once again it was a pleasure to watch argentinas world cup qualifier with bolivia.

now trust me bolivia are no great shakes, but the argies could do no more than batter them.

there were a fair few on here at the time of the last world cup that suggested that in lampard, gerrard, cole, owen and rooney england had the best midfield/strikers in the world.

it may not be patriotic to say it again, but they arent on the same planet when it comes to internationals, as the likes of riquelme, mascherano, messi, tevez etc.

wheras argentina flow england plod.

yes we will probably scrape through, via the back door ,from the weakest group uefa could possibly assemble, and yes we will probably grind our way through to the quarter finals and lose, on penalties. but this will probably be sufficent for maclaren to keep his job, so this may not be a good thing.

the ex smoggie boss promished a new dawn, a fresh start etc, but he had svens midfield out again in austria.

Leave Sven out of this!!!!   he actually WON things as a league manager and coaching England, well you can't polish a turd, can you?

The problem lies with the FA, Sky and Chelski, Arse and Man Ure

Some of these players believe their own hype, take likkle Stevie for example, one footed, slow, dirty and basically about five hundred years behind anything the Italians, Germans, French and Argies have

We simply don't coach players well enough; the premiershite is all about speed and aggression and precious little else

Having said that, I hope we do enough to get through, just because I like England to qualify for this competition

have to be honest and admit last world cup I was blinded by the hype and my own optimism

Chippy wippy was right then and he is now, about england only tho, the argies aren't all that
