You were right about the variability of the costs, you can design your own using simple tools like MS Frontpage, which gives a reasonable site for virtually no cost or you can literally pay thousands for interactive web content etc.

It really depends what you wish to do, I had a pretty good web site (and publicity) created for about £800, but I had to know how I wanted it to look in the first place.

It sounds like you are well on the way in the ideas dept already so depending on the complexity of your business you should be able to get it done reasonably cheaply.

Depends what you want the site for. You could get a 'myspace' page for nothing and customise that (also for nothing). It's quite easy to set up and there are lots of sites that show you how.

Cheers

The site will be briefly about my wife's grandfather and his brief diary about being captured in Calai 1940, the march into Germany and his 5 years as POW in Poland.

Plus a few other bits
I did have a site up and running a few years ago but had someone looking after it for me alas we lost contact and the diary pages etc have gone missing and only a small message board remains if anyone knows how to get them back the site was called Dugoutpaddy and was an ezboard thing..

I don't suppose that makes much sense sctatchinghead

Keep them tips coming boys and girls!

Do it as a blog. You can start immediately (right this minute if you want) and keep adding bits as you think of them or in reply to comments people make.

http://www.livejournal.com/ is a pretty good tool because it allows interaction between blogs on its server.

http://www.blogger.com is the most popular one and probably has more graphics features etc. than live journal does. It had no interaction last time I looked however, so no social networking aspect.

Example of blogs on each (I'm sure you can do much better)

Also you can get a URL and forward it so instead of people having to remember a quite complex URL you could register mygrandadswar.co.uk (or whatever you fancy) for a fiver and point it to your blog.
