There may well yet be a twist in the tail. BMW's cars are under investigation for fuel irregularities, BMW allegedly used a fuel cooling system which allowed their fuel to be 13 degrees cooler and therefore denser; thus producing more horsepower. This could very well disqualify their cars as its an unfair advantage. Should they be disqualified, this would move Hamilton up to 5th and give him the championship.

I can't help but thinking whatever is decided with the fuel they will not disqualify the drivers because it would seem farcical to hand the drivers championship to another driver the day after one has been proclaimed.

I am surprised though, nothing has been mentioned regarding Ferrari alledgedly winning the opening grand prix with an illegal car...

There are plenty of precedents for changing of results, albeit none that I'm aware of that changed the destination of the championship. I seem to remember Hakkinen, Couthard and Schumacher have all been disqualified for the same reason. I agree that it would be a bit farcical but logically if the fuel was outside the rules then they would have little alternative but to disqualify the cars. This would elevate Hamilton to 5th.

Thinking about it, its more likely, given the FIA's level of cosyness with Ferrari that only the constructors points will be deducted from BMW. Max wouldn't want to be upsetting Marenello.

From the FIA website

Quote:
The BMW Sauber and Williams teams are being investigated by Brazilian Grand Prix stewards over possible technical irregularities on their cars at the end of Sunday’s Interlagos race.

The enquiries relate to fuel temperature, which under Formula One racing’s technical regulations are not allowed to fall more than 10 degrees Celsius below ambient air temperature at any time. According to FIA data, Williams and BMW Sauber exceeded this range.

Nico Rosberg finished fourth for Williams, with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld fifth and sixth respectively for BMW Sauber. If they were to be disqualified, it would move McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton up from seventh to fourth, making him world champion, rather than Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

Raikkonen won the race from team mate Felipe Massa, with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso third.

Stewards enquiry result now in.

Quote:
A statement from the sport's governing body, the FIA, said the fuel in the cars was "more than [the permitted] 10 degrees below the ambient temperature". The statement said Heidfeld's fuel was 13C lower than ambient at his first stop and 12C lower at his second. Kubica's varied by 14C, 13C and 13C at his three stops, while Rosberg's was 13C and 12C out at his two stops.

Filling the car with cooler fuel can give a performance advantage. Cooler fuel is denser, so either it can mean it takes slightly less time to refuel the car or marginally more can be added in the same time. And it would give a slight power advantage for about three laps before it returned to ambient temperature out on the track. Excluding the cars would have risked turning one of the most exciting championship finales in F1 history into a farce.

But the stewards had the power to disqualify them, even though the advantage conferred would have had no bearing on the title race. The total advantage for each car over the race distance was almost certainly no more than a second.

After 7 hours deliberation the stewards came out with a statement that they didn't have enough evidence! We are asked to believe that the most technological sport on the planet didn't have a thermometer. If they didn't have the evidence then why the enquiry? I smell the hand of the FIA, in particularly Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley.

If the rules have been broken but no penalty imposed then if I were Ron Dennis Id be livid, especially after having to fork out $100m.
