There's a long thread over on rivals suggesting that one of these streets should be named after Michael Maidens. Whilst I appreciate the sentiment and the feelings that are going into this I don't feel comfortable about it. I think its a bit over the top and driven by grief. I think Quakerz put it excellently.

Quakerz wrote:
Listen lads, I feel for you for losing one of your players. I feel for Maidens, so tragic to lose ones life before it has really begun, and I'm obviously very sad for his parents and family, its just tragic, it really truly is. Absolutely tragic.

However, naming a street after him? What about the hundreds of other people that die in Hartlepool every year? What about them? The people that die of old age, the people that die prematurely through disease, the other young people that die in accidents, every single year. What about them?

Did anybody people name a street after toothless? No. People grieved, people mourned, people empathised with his family. But that is how it should be. It is completely unfair to lobby your mayor into naming a street after Maidens, as after all the football club is just one fraction of Hartlepool's being. This is overkill.

The most fitting tribute to Maidens would be if Hartlepool United made some sort of tribute, such as naming a stand or a bar or something like that in his memory, and it is also much more relevant, as lest we forget, Maidens was a young Hartlepool United player, but not an eminent and well known Hartlepool personality.

Certainly something to do with football, his profession and place of work, would be more fitting.

a valid and fair judgement and it needed the remoteness of someone not so closely affected by it to come up with it.

I do see his point, however the council have said they want to name some streets after footballers & thats why the idea is suggested.

I tend to agree with Quakerz, but I didn't post this after Quakerz did on rivals because I 100% agree with Frank.

Although the intentions are commendable it's far too early to be even talking about stuff like this.
