Over 65,s Driving

Renamed in memory of John Hawksworth, a stalwart member who passed this day 2nd August 2020. RIP Mr Monkeybutt.

Sadly we must add the name of Kevin Minton, Aka Mr Ripper who passed 30/6/22. Kev was also Mr politically incorrect but a nicer lad you could never meet.

Over 65,s Driving

Plenty has been said on this topic over the years but yesterday really brought home to me why some should surrender their licence. We are running a trip to somewhere 25 miles away but at least 3 members out of those who have a car refuse to use their vehicle as its classed as being too far away. As i said we are not asking for anyone to drive at peak times but between 10 am and 3pm at the latest and if anyone finds that an impossibility they should not be on the road because the jouney consists of 10 miles motorway driving on the M65 thats hardly the M25 on a friday afternoon.

There's plenty of drivers of all ages who prefer not using busy or faster roads. Why should 65btrigger a change in driving laws, why not 60 or 70?
Maybe a better alternative than picking on over 65s would be to have refresher assessments every 5 years taking in Motorway and town centre driving?

I drove up Blakelock this morning and was overtaken on the blind bend right outside the college..the driver then swerved and overtook another car and tore round the roundabout…people like that are the problem…not someone who’s a bit wary.
I drove back from settle a couple of weeks ago avoiding major roads because I find motorways a grind…went via Ribblehead viaduct, Hawes Kirkby Stephen, Brough, Middleton in Teesdale and Stanhope…a great run with twisty roads and brilliant scenery where you had to actually concentrate…..and find somewhere decent to eat.

not picking on the over 65,s as they are my generation anyway and just happen to be of that age. everyone has a prefarence to the times and types of road they drive on. i dislike single lane roads especially at night but am willing to drive on them when its necessary to do so. there is a massive difference in disliking something and refusing point blank to do it.

back in the 70,s and early 80,s i felt exactly the same for the reasons you stated especially the eating thing. now its motorway every time for me as the usual quickness of the journey means you can eat before and after the journey is over and motorway services are just a piss stop. knew a woman with family in swindon who drove from near gt,yarmouth to there regularly off any motorways but learned to use them after getting 6 points on her licence one day driving on minor roads she did not know all that well.

The wife is down Portsmouth next week which was a regular run for me and asked me for the best way and it trips of my tongue..A19, A1, M18, M1, A 43, M40, A34, M3 and M27 yer can’t miss it…..mind you travelling back, all traffic converges on the M1 at Leicester and stops for no apparent reason to pee you off….never worked out why yet :angry-tappingfoot:

If they introduce compulsory eyetests for the over 70s some might lose their license but why restrict it to the over 70s, people forget their eyesight deteriorates over the years.

Fair point - but why don't 'we' start by getting all of the 'unqualified' drivers off the roads? Those from Eastern European countries with licences for tractors who are allowed loose on our roads. Folk with no licence whatsoever - or licences which aren't recognised in the Western world. And, yes, then lets find yet another stick to hit our own with.

Re the original post, I can’t see the problem.

If you’re over 65 and don’t feel happy about driving in certain conditions surely that’s a good thing, a sensible thing.

Jeez i might as well rap in, 71 with a dodgy jam tart. But im comfortable with any road, motorways or country roads.
Yet my step grandson has only had a licence 3 years and at one point had no insurance and got a fine and now no licence due to his desire to speed constantly.
Start with the boy racers.

dunny you talk about boy racers but i,ve done 2 of those speeding courses and the vast majority present were middle aged and older. if they know where the cameras are and they drive in the evening and night that many seem to do they,ll never get caught as the mobile camera vans have gone to bed by then.

The young uns will have an app on their phone which will tell them where the speed cameras are.
