At least we can be proud of the "bat cave" shelter that they built at a cost of £100m.
I'm sure it was worth it... NOT.

Already 2 lines and i think there was another years ago.

Cancel and spend on the rest of the network elsewhere and it would transform the country.

I would like the buffoons who originally came up with this white elephant of a pipe dream to be brought to task and made to explain why they thought this was a good idea and worthy of the huge investment ploughed into it so far.

Put HS2 in administration and let the administrators deal with it is a suggestion made by a politician.
Maybe?

Personally I'd rather live in Birmingham than London....but then again I'd rather live in Billingham than Birmingham.

I agree ….all that money to be there 20 minutes earlier…..just move the train timetable 20 minutes forward.

Would've thought it would be cheaper and easier to upgrade the present lines and rolling stock so they can go faster?
By the time it's done there'll be fewer people wanting to use the trains as more work remotely and are replaced by AI.
The ultimate vanity project which doesn't make anyone look good.

or just slash the fares and leave things as they were. its not the twenty odd minute extra journey time that puts people off the trains its the cost especially if there is more than one in a family or group. there is one thing we can learn from the victorians is that back then it was quicker to build a railway with pick and shovels than it is now with modern equipment. hope i,m still around once its open to see how long it will take before some bridge or tunnel is deamed unsafe after opening.

Read a story a while ago that goes like this....(can't remember the EXACT details)....
Bloke living in Somerset was buying a car somewhere in Lancashire. Checked price of 2 single tickets to Manchester Picadilly(?).
Him and his partner ended up going to Spain for a long weekend leaving from Bristol Airport and then flying back in to Manchester to go and buy the car.
Worked out cheaper getting a return flight to Spain and having 3 nights in a hotel for 2 than getting 2 single train tickets from Bristol to Manchester.

The whole concept gets dafter by the day. As you say, on completion it'll probably cost a family of 4 a week's wage to travel between the 2 cities by rail. Most business will be carried out via remote meetings and / or AI.
Far better to scrap it and invest in traditional apprenticeships and re-establishing manufacturing in the UK. Thatcher and Blair pretty much destroyed our industrial and manufacturing heritage for the sake of "service industries", the problem is most of these will soon be replaced by automation and AI. We'll be left totally reliant upon immigrant tradesmen and handouts from the newer 1st World states. Another fine mess they're getting us into.

can seriously believe it. can go back just over 10 years when i knew a bloke who lived in accrington and the phone went during the night. found out his father who lived in gt.yarmouth was seriously ill. went down to the station when it opened and got a single to gt. yarmouth that cost him well over £200 because he had no time to piss around on the internet to get a cheaper fare and go through that split ticking farce that would have made the fare cheaper. if you did that on a bus faretable it was called a cock up which was quickly resolved. would love to see the small list of countries where train fares cost more than we have to pay. you,d have to sell your house if our train companies ran the trans siberian railway where half the journey would be bus replacement anyway.

As long as you book before 6 pm the day before you travel you can get cheaper advance fare tickets.
Trainline or Trainpal do it but i find i can get even better deals at Hartlepool station if you tell the bloke you want the cheapest ticket and can specify dates & times of outward and return travel.
It means you get split tickets which may mean, say if you are going to Edinburgh from West Hartlepool you will get a ticket to say Morpeth then Morpeth to Edinburgh but you stay on the same train!
Yes it bonkers and quicker the politicians get the nationalised Great British Railways sorted the better. John Major and the Conservatives (1994/1997) should called out for what they did to this country not just trains but buses.

Shouldn't have to jump through hoops to find the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way to travel.
If they want to get people out of cars we need local and national public transport which is affordable, reliable, clean and comfortable, not the profit is king treat them like dumb sheep approach we've currently got.

back in the day british railways were not ideal. however i doubt anyone can say services and prices have improved for passengers since privatisation. as a country we are obsessed with the so called benefits of competition but we never see them unless we become a shareholder. all those years in the EU and we never once followed there transport systems where here its all about profit profit profit and cut the rest if there is no chance of ever seeing it happening.
