Vets are under pressure to generate income, no wonder bills can be expensive.
Vets working for IVC Evidensia (IVC) which owns more than 900 surgeries, employs 8000 vets and vets nurses who all say they are monitored and set targets by the company.
IVC - which is owned by a private equity firm - also owns the UK's largest emergency out-of-hours service, called Vets Now, 55% of veterinary groups are corporate owned,

I remember the days when each town/village had their own vets and these vets were normal people, helpful and would do what they could to help the animal. Now everything is so corporate, so greedy and things are only going to get worse.
Vet bills, gas bills, water bills council tax etc, greed greed greed!

back then you knew you could afford the bill before you walked in and never used them as a last resort which might not be of benefit to the animal. even pet insurance goes up more than car insurance as a percentage and thats without ever getting a no claims bonus. you are right its greed and a bigger yearly profit that needs to be made rather than the ability of the customer to pay. is there actually any one man bands around anymore like there once was.

That is absolutely scandalous.
Maybe our agent of change will sort it out but somehow I doubt it.

And the prices have gone up 60% in 10 years.

All about making money from the public!

The dog owners around here actually brag how much they have spent at their vets on their poor spoilt dogs.
£300 for 1/2 hour swim in a water tank and so forth!

So if some people are willing to pay the prices for treatment, then it is forced on the rest of us.

I’d pay for necessary treatment but they can put the pseudo medical/cosmetic nonsense where the monkey puts his nuts

Agree Snowy, but they have you by the short and curlies for necessary treatment.

If people are daft enough to pay over the odds for their pets to be pampered, then that should at least fund the important treatment. There is no need to charge so much when the treatment costs can be 10% of what is being charged.

From the link I posted some owners are paying 7k a year. Maybe that is specific to their pet's ailments but I reckon the pet insurance is a nice little earner!

I got a policy in 2019 for my terrier with a well known pet insurance provider for £24 a month….my last quote was for £69 amontillado rising to £84….and never made a single claim.

Dead money insurance.
Works out better to pay yourself over the longer term.
Maybe I'm more intelligent than the average person.

why is the first thing asked when you get an appointment, are you insured. cannot prove it but like a lot these days it could be two tier yet again this time in bills cheaper for the non insured. thing is the buggers, unlike places i use for other things will not take cash without giving you a bill. years back you could ask a wise traveller whats wrong with your dog and they,d tell you if you crossed their palm with silver and there words worked.

I got shot of my insurer and got the same cover for a third of the price from one of the big supermarkets.

have you renewed it yet. its like car insurance they give you a good deal 1st year just to roll you in and next year it can go up more than you previously paid. then you go to another for less than the old quote but higher than it was 2 years before. thats why its just a big con as how much you try it goes up no matter how much you try and keep changing.
