For those into old programmes there’s an eBay auction ending tonight with a Pools v Sunderland from 1955. You’ll need deep pockets though as it’s already reached£130 and rising.

Does anyone know who we played in our first floodlit game?
1967 I think was when the floodlights were installed at Victoria Ground.

I gave all my programmes away, I had the Man Utd cup game from 1957.

I never mention that match, it’s too easy to offend anyone who was there..I recall someone who was a glint in his fathers eye and attended but was piss poor at maths back in 2005 when we worked it out.

Me late fatha was old enough to attend the Man U match (born 1943) but his story never quite had the ring of truth about it.

Hartlepool's population must have been around 250,000 if you believe everyone who swears they were there.

Us and Chesterfield were the only two teams in the football league without floodlights, so that match against Southend left the Cheaters out on their own. I was there but wasn't at the Man Utd game, unfortunately. I was at the Chelsea game the year before, though.

I wasn't at the Man U game but was one of the jury when the crofters hung the Monkey 'O' on the beach at the Headland.

A couple of posts about this on another Board....

He's told so many whoppers he cant possibly remember all of them.

I'm also 99% certain hes claimed to have been at the Man United game in the past .

I think he said he played in it at one point, or he could have taken some of the survivors of the Munich Air Disaster to Disney Land.

i,m in the camp of geoffrey hilditch who wrote numerous transport books. even with their lower running costs he was never a fan of the old 6 cylinder gardner until a better version came out for the fleetline. he admitted it was a bosses bus and never one that an exhubarent driver would take to even in a hilly area like halifax. the only company to worry passengers because they had a destination called Steep Lane where a stranger would ask which one.

Didn't we get Sunderland's old floodlights after they'd fitted new ones?

Or is that something I dreamed up while I was at the Man United match..?

You are lying because I have never claimed to have been there. Show me the post claiming that. I had an offer of a ticket but my dad advised against it. He didn't want me to go on my own. Those were the days when a parent said no, they meant it. sadx

Well I can't recall saying I was there but if you can produce the posts, I'll hold my hands up. Accusing me of saying I was playing is a bit far fetched, even for you.
Anybody saying that on here I would say was taking the piss.
You often predict Pools score saying for example 1-2 draw. Would you expect to be called a liar for that in the distant future. Mr Ripper used to say anybody who can't handle piss taking shouldn't be on here.

I'm sure you can work that scenario out for yourself. You can start with the scenario of another person who has a ticket but can't go for some reason and offers it to you. Happens all the time.
You are continuously trying to present me as a liar without ever producing any evidence which is unacceptable and before you accuse me (again) of deleting posts from yesteryear, check with Mr I and he will tell you I am not doing that. The Moderator Log records all such actions as you well know.

first floodlight game southend

The first Fourth Division game played under floodlights at the Vic was indeed against Southend United. However, as a then ten year old I recall that prior to that, Cloughie had set up a friendly game with his former club Sunderland to commemorate the big switch on.

Unfortunately the Mackems renaged on their commitment to Cloughie to send their first team to the Vic and informed him that they would only be able to send a reserve side. Cloughie went apeshit and effectively told SAFC where to stick their reserve side.

Cloughie then got hold of one of his mates at Sheff Wed - who were at that time a strong First Division outfit - and they subsequently sent a full first team for the midweek occasion. I recall that it was a highly entertaining game that ended in a 3-3 draw. I always had a high regard for Sheff Wed after that gesture which even the dubious defeat at Cardiff did not diminish.

Funny how the big teams in the region have generally ignored anything below their level and have in my opinion always ignored us and Darlo back in the day.

more so now as they never loan us players too good for the level we are at. since when has a successful pools or darlo has ever had an affect on their gates.

All down to Stan Anderson.*

Seems obvious to me like. He captained all three of the "big" clubs, and drank in the one in Horden.

Probably hated Poolies being a Yacker, and obviously every fucker hates Darlo!

I rest my case...

always wanted us to beat darlo and finish higher up the league than them. same with the other NE clubs but prefer any of them to succeed over the ones in other parts of the country if we are not involved. what next one part of the town hating the other half.

Er, my post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek Accy.

Stan was a very close friend of me nana and grandad in Horden - so much so we called him Uncle Stan.

Funnily enough I’ve always picked one up at places I’ve visited over the years as a local souvenir and can’t stop now….thay aint cheap in this country, ….and no one does a PD2 radiator that looks like a PD2 radiator  :laugh
but they do diamler cvg6,s that when you push em they go faster than the original they are modelled on.
But they get there eventually and never fall apart….it could be the Gardner 6 cylinders. :wink
i,m in the camp of geoffrey hilditch who wrote numerous transport books. even with their lower running costs he was never a fan of the old 6 cylinder gardner until a better version came out for the fleetline. he admitted it was a bosses bus and never one that an exhubarent driver would take to even in a hilly area like halifax. the only company to worry passengers because they had a destination called Steep Lane where a stranger would ask which one.

Apparently the Gardner factory was like a Victorian class room layout with the assembly points laid out under an overseers viewpoint watching the engineers work.
