The audience probably thought he was going to be like his character Jim Royle in The Royle Family, tbh the odd one I watched I never found it funny. He was overshadowed by Sue Johnson a great actress, one of her best performances was a 3 part TV series Goodbye Cruel World where she played a woman who was diagnosed with degenerative illness.

he was the right man for the part like the rest where to make the programme popular. like so many others before they get the cast spot on but in subsequent reasons once shows go longer they are less good with different people in them. think hi di hi suffered more than most in this has have all the soaps.
