From your posts on here you sound about my age, but for the life of me I can't remember Throston Bridge. I thought it was pulled down before I was born.

My nana lived on the Headland so I used to go over there every week, so it's not as if I don't know where it was or never went to that side of town.

Anyone have any idea when it was demolished? Snowy perhaps, he has a good knowledge of the town from years ago?

So you must have walked through it a few times and not remembered. I would have thought the trains n carriages used by the dock yard would have impressed a 7 yrs old.

It probably did impress me at the time, but I honestly can't remember anything about it. Even when I look at the old photos of the bridge & the area it doesn't bring back any memories.

I remember putting a rope right around my bike wheel when I could not afford a inner tube, then put the tyre on top. It worked a treat and never burst again. Mind you it was like riding on a pebble road after.

Does anyone remember Jack's shop on the Central. It's the shop on the left after the former Gus Robinson offices. He used to have a old push button silver metal giant till that made a ding sound when he opened it. He used to have dozens of big glass old style sweet jars with a huge selection and you could pick n mix. Looking back though old Jack was about 70 and grabbed the sweets bare handed. On the way home from a Jimmy buckles hair cut our reward was a giant white bag brimming with sweets.

Just come across the so called details of this Vulcan plane crash. I have just read this report which admits varying reports of the crash. Well I along with many school kids watched it happen aged 11 at our West View Primary School back in 1971. It was a beautiful clear blue sky and me and me mate had been kicking a ball around the School field I think it must have been lunchtime. We seen the plane flying across from the sea inland towards Hart Village area. It made some loud banging noise a little dark grey smoke trail started spilling out of one wing for a few seconds before it nose dived straight down and crashed with a bang and smoke. It was not that low really thinking about it now but still probably 5 / 6 thousand feet or more. Later the news said 5 had parachuted out before the crash. Well like I said a clear blue sky and none of us seen anybody parachute out. Reading this report the Captain got a medal for attempting to avoid houses and aiming the plane out to sea. They need to take that medal back he lied 100%. Looking back now it's obvious to me this lot bailed out over the sea or beech and let the plane fly in a straight line inland because it was flying along right to left steady away from the sea before the bang and the smoke that followed. Hero's my arse rakxe Like I said I seen no parachutes never mind 5 of them. The only conclusion now is it got into difficulty coming from the sea ( probably one engine blow up ) they bailed out followed by the coward Captain who must have thought it was about to explode or something. The plane then continued across the our eye sight with no signs of any problem. Then I reckon the second engine blow making that bang followed by the smoke then it just nose dived straight down into Wingate. I just rang Andy who was stood next to me and still a friend after all these years and reminded him of that crash and what he remembers seeing. He basically said word for word what I seen. We actually believed it was probably a two man plane because it did not look any bigger than a Spitfire ( that could have been cas it was quite high up ) and both had died in the crash. Hero :angry-screaming:

Not sure Kettering it was a sweet shop and maybe sold newspapers and foods. All I remember are the sweets served with his mucky old hands and finger nails but amazing sweets.

The shop is still there today but it's run by a Asian family I believe. If you turn in the road between Gus Robinson and Jack's it took you to the old brick arch twinned with the brus arch. I believe the arch was never pulled down but it was buried alive  under the mud and probably as good as the brus arch. Maybe Snowy or Gray would know better.

Got a call of a old school mate who got my number from my mate Andy. He remembers it like yesterday and agrees that the 5 on board lied. He made one very good point and that was when those 5 jumped out although we did not see them they will have watched the plane fly for a few minutes before it nose dived . When they landed on the ground the Captain probably said " fooking hell it's crashed into a buildings " and feared being blamed. So made up the story of turning the plane out to sea. It was a clear blue sky no clowds at all so from a parachute in the sky they had a perfect view of the place it crashed and panicked. I understand that because they probably thought people had be killed. When awarded medals they had no choice but to accept them. I have found more reports on this crash and lots of witnesses are saying the same as us. :roll:The other thing reported is the plane ended up in between the school and farm field with debris on both sides including the school yard.

all weather football pitches and coastal erosion in norfolk plus a ban on new species crossing the channel by a vigelant border force. even insects know to keep out of britain now in case they,ll be eaten by the population.

I've planted a fair few buddleia bushes, known as the butterfly bush, I get hundred of butterflies in my garden each day in the summer. They bushes need to be heavily pruned and kept well away from buildings but they attract loads of butterflies and bees, so are worth it in my opinion.

I found out two Halifax Corporation bus stop signs one green and one orange I acquired …back in the day …..made of really thick aluminium….and screwed them on the fence down the bottom of the Garden…..our lass always takes things in over winter in the shed and told me to take them down for the winter.
I pointed out that I acquired them in the early eighties and they must have been out all year in Halifax for 40 years before that…and the Council doesn’t take bus stops down for the winter.
She still never understood the irony of her request

I found out two Halifax Corporation bus stop signs one green and one orange I acquired …back in the day …..made of really thick aluminium….and screwed them on the fence down the bottom of the Garden…..our lass always takes things in over winter in the shed and told me to take them down for the winter.
I pointed out that I acquired them in the early eighties and they must have been out all year in Halifax for 40 years before that…and the Council doesn’t take bus stops down for the winter.
She still never understood the irony of her request

keep em up as there is a better chance of catching a halifax corporation bus near to your house than a stagecoach one especially when it starts to get dark. they are worth about 80 quid each if you are getting short of cash to buy a 25/6 pools shirt.

I got one on the Isle of Wight and the bloke serving was a bit new……so I got it for the price marked on it for £3…about to walk out and this bloke comes after me as he wanted it back because it had the wrong price on and a bit Basil Fawlty to boot.
Just kept walking out into the car park and still on my then I pointed out the price and told him it was his problem, not mine….still went on and straightforward ‘Fuck Off ‘ did the trick.

When I lived in Tottington nr Bury back in early 80s me and my mate on our way home from a late shift around 10pm pitch black. Around that area there is a lot of countryside. We came through Ramsbottom heading towards Bury in the countryside. Then seen a light moving about in the distance got closer only to find some scrap blokes one with a bright torch taking down the bus stop sign and putting it in the back of a pick up. The next day we went back the same way and every single bust stop sign ( must have been 6 ) had been stolen for scrap. Now if thats not desperate for money what is.

Nar nowt to see there Accy. I always enjoyed climbing to the top Walshaw Monument for its stunning views but only on a nice day. On one side of the hill you could watch the original Krypton Factor assault course at Holcombe Moor training camp between Bury and Ramsbottom. Been up many many times but not once did I see the contestants or cameras during the show. banghead
