Funny though how you get a mental picture of someone you’ve never seen based solely on their replies on here

That's a very interesting thought and strange that we didn't take full advantage of those machines.

Did any of you make stilts out of soup tins. We would turn the tins upside down and poke two holes in each tin. Then thread a string through making two string handles one for each hand. They made loads of noise and would usually crumble after short distances but good fun trying.

Cerebos Salt Works produced salt and Bisto. It was taken over by RHM Foods in the 1960s and over the next years produced a vast range of foods including Paxo stuffing, One Cal lemonade, Capri Sun, Atora suet, Chesswood mushrooms and curries, Brands soup and sauces, Sharwoods chutnies and curries and Cracottes biscuits.

Salt production ceased in 1970 and in November of that year, the salt production block was demolished.

RHM Greatham became known as Sharwoods in the mid-1990s before becoming Centura foods prior to closure in 2003.

yes. my mam worked there and her elder sister after they both left school. unless you wanted shop work they must have been one of the highest employers of women back in the day. do not think either of them would have made the dinner break if they had worked in a store.

WOW Obviously a longtime ago so it's difficult to work out from the picture exactly what's what. Everything in that street I guess was pulled down. sctatchinghead I don't recognise any of it and had never heard of that factory or the Church in the picture. Cheers Mutters love learning about our town history especially the pictures.

Aye, sounds about right. Bet when he was a kid, he always won when they played "statues".

Which is another blast from the past - as modern kids couldn't stay still if their lives depended on it..!
