Jess has hurt her leg while running on Thursday night. She can't put any weight on it and gave out an horrible scream when she done it. Got a Vet appointment at 10.50am this morning.
We all know Vets are like Dentists and charge what they like. rakxe
How much do you reckon today's Bill will be??
I'll go for £180. sadx

I'm going to guess double that, seems to cost £100 just to get through the door.

As for dentists, impossible to find a new NHS one when you move area. So ended up just going private - price for same check up and clean cost me 50% more than last time I went only 6 months ago.

£126 today's bill. Recommendations for X-Rays or scan, depending on outcome of those be prepared to remortgage your house and / or have a major battle with pet insurance if you've got it.
Thieves the lot of them - Vets and insurers. Not many independent vets left nowadays so prices set by big businesses across the board.

£80 for today, then if they refer her to the hospital at Bradbury you’ll need deep pockets!

There was a time when vets owned their practice but the law was changed allowing companies to buy vets' practices. Check if your practice is owned by a chain. If it is be prepared to pay through the nose!

I took our dog to get checked for scratching her ear and it was a yeast infection which is quite common. One small bottle of drops later and it was £138. I thought it might have been around 70 to 80, so you might be looking at a bit more than £180 depending on treatment.
Vets prices are shooting up all the time.

Vets n Tradesmen last resort.

The information on YouTube n Google is excellent.
Why pay someone what you can do.
Don't underrate yourselves.

Unless it's an Emergency.

Poor Jess I hate it when animals get injured. banghead She will be ok with lots of dad love. If the bill is more than you reckon I will happily donate £50 to help her.

Prepare yourself. I had a similar problem with my son's collie last year. It was a Saturday evening, so might have made a difference, but the final bill was £800+ & it turned out to be a flare up of his arthritis. Thank God for pet insurance !

Well it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...
The Vet thinks it could be her ligaments in her knee.

Consultation...£50.50
Medicine...£21.33
Tablets...£17.94
.............= £89.77

BUT...and it's a BIG BUT....
Another appointment next week and if she isn't any better...

X-Ray...£300
And if she needs an operation.....£2,000 to £3,000!!!!

If you need tablets or medication ,I recommend Weldricks pet pharmacy,Doncaster.
They cost a fraction of what vets charge.

You don’t need to pay high vet bills. You can buy the medicine from a third party
Online . Just ask the vet for the invoice and pay for the examination. That’s what my sister in law does

its something the government should be looking into. its a complete shambles and a rip off which for me was caused by pet insurance and giving vets the opportunity to rip people off who at their lowest ebb. all pet owners regard them as the lowest of any low thats ever existed. just how many have had to put their animal down because of the money and nothing else. my old lad is getting close to 14 now and i,m not going to borrow the 6 grand i had to with my previous one for what turned out an xtra 5 months of life after being conned that the treatment would most likely be a success. most owners do there best for any pet they own but with little help unless they can afford it.

I agree, vets should come under government control, pay the vet and staff a certain wage and provide free treatment to our pets.
Donations could also be an option but at the moment the costs are astronomical!

My pet insurance in 2019 monthly was £23….last year it hit £83 and never ever claimed on it.. So dumped them (paid the money out for the tooth job)…..then got the other dog and tried another large insurance provider for a same benefits policy for two dogs and pay £42.
Crazy. sctatchinghead

that price will be just to role you in and will be possibly more than the original one next year. insurance is like the initials of the old manchester, sheffield and lincolnshire railway. money sunk and lost where the companies live of the fear of those they screw.

Met a fella last year who was walking his dog. Presumably you are aware of the Supervet?
This guy had handed over £18k - no insurance and heart over head. I voted against getting a dog precisely because of this sort of situation. Eventually you are going to have to put down one of your family. i lost the vote and the dog is now 11 - so the medicals are starting. I'm hoping a massive heart attack in a couple of years takes the decision out of our hands.

Without wanting to hijack the thread, one thing we also don't appreciate in this country is the cost of medical treatment. With the NHS being considered 'free', and us not having visiblity of the cost of treatments, there is nothing we can use to compare the value of it.

Wishing your pets a swift recovery.

the frightening thing is the alternative to a failing NHS would be for us to take out medical insurance. might as well put many of us down at the outset if that was run by similar types as pet insurance is. us tallpeople are fucked as like for big dogs we,d have to pay more.

We had a hamster years ago, bought it for my daughter for from Waltons, I can’t remember how much but no more the a couple pounds. It developed a wheeze took it to the vet £20 for an injection. Irony was she got fed up with cleaning it etc after a few weeks, we give it away to a relative.

Vets play on people’s feelings, very rarely would some one say I can’t afford it, put the animal to sleep.
Could not go to the PDSA in the Boro, it’s free or used to be although you need to give a donation.

i,m going back a few years now but to use the free/donation PDSA service you needed proof of lack of money by being on benefits or low pensions.

jesus talk about inflation. had two who had that operation and the cost was nowhere like that. one good thing is that its usually a succesful operation but needs a long re hab for the dog afterwards with lead walking only for months so could be seen as money well spent and not a gamble.

Got told yesterday it will cost....£5,200!!!!! rakxe rakxe

I’ve got a friend whose daft little terrier/Pug/thing - had a very similar problem. He wasn’t sure what to do until he came back to his house one afternoon and his dog was sat on the outside doorstep just sort of looking at him forlornly like.

He took the plunge and paid nearly 5K to get a metal joint put in and the op has been a huge success. The dog (not a youngster) now runs around killing rats, chasing cars and picking fights with other dogs and enjoys a happy lifestyle.

It was a big bill but that’s the risk I suppose.

its something the government should be looking into. its a complete shambles and a rip off which for me was caused by pet insurance and giving vets the opportunity to rip people off who at their lowest ebb. all pet owners regard them as the lowest of any low thats ever existed. just how many have had to put their animal down because of the money and nothing else. my old lad is getting close to 14 now and i,m not going to borrow the 6 grand i had to with my previous one for what turned out an xtra 5 months of life after being conned that the treatment would most likely be a success. most owners do there best for any pet they own but with little help unless they can afford it.

It was the government who passed a law allowing big corporations the right to buy up small family run vet practices.
Like other money making companies, they have weekly targets to meet, that’s why bills have shot up astronomically.

did not know that. all i do know is you never see the one man band type of vet where you see the same one who has a receptionist that sometimes is a family member. go in now and there seems to be loads of little helpers wandering about who need to be paid.

No different from companies buying up GP and Dental Practices, my dental practice is owned by My Dentist by an investment banking company who now have monthly subscription fee with a ‘free’ check up every 6 months. Centene Corporation an US Company own 70 GP Practices in England.
This is what Farage wants, an US type privately run health service.
