It has been known  though I'm off today as I don't work Mondays - 4 days a week is more than enough grief at the chalkface! Just as well, as my youngest is off today, due to a teacher training day
(known in the trade as, Death by PowerPoint Day)!

It's not bad, pays the bills.
Only remain in it nowadays for the holidays- 6 weeks or 24 days in my case and then a fortnight off. Which works well as both my kids are still of school age. And there really is NO better job in August! (Just the other 11 months- really not keen on September, November, January, March & June)

Used to like it, but had my fingers burnt a couple of times when I was head of department. Knocks the enthusiasm out of you, and I refuse to brown nose.

By and large it's not the kids who are the problem - it's ambitious know nowt arseholes, who blame others for their own shortcomings, and try and throw you under the bus.

22 years in and potentially another 21 to go- reckon I'll be lucky to get through another 8.

I'll be cashing in my pension at the first opportunity - seen too many people hang on, and then keel over shortly afterwards.

My Dad passed at 71- so got about 25 left.
Work until 68 would leave me 3 years - no thanks.
Don't think anyone should be teaching much beyond their mid 50's, just not realistic or healthy for anybody staff or kids.

Yep, I don't blame you, my step-dad always said when talking about private pensions, "take as much as you can as soon as you can & get out of work as soon as you can" As his theory was every year you worked after 60, knocked 2 years off your life!!

I had more than my fair share of those horrible arsehole type head teachers. Deluded individuals who brown nosed themselves into good powerful & harmful positions. However I also had a couple of top quality teachers who worked hard to reach such positions and earned the full respect they got. Strange thing I never met any good Head Masters / Mistresses not even deputies.

Trouble is nowadays - you have to be social worker too, it's not just teaching.

You think the kids can be hard work, until you meet some of the parents - then you realise the kids are the brains of the operation! That was particularly apt when I worked at a Special school for 2 years!

Austerity and all the cut backs in funding for basic stuff like maintenance of buildings, Closing Sure Start centres and family support services, as well as the previous government utter disdain towards state education, have had a significant effect on staff morale. This coupled with the more recent cost of living and sky high energy bills, has made a challenging job almost impossible.

Would say the vast majority of teachers I know are looking for an exit strategy to some degree.

Ultimately it's the kids that lose out. banghead

Funny thing is I was talking to a lass I know who said during Covid that her and husband were both at home all the time and found out she didn’t really like him…….not enough to get divorced, but realised they only met on an evening and sometimes at weekends prior to Covid.
Our lass is out most days with her mates..a sort of ‘Last of the Summer Vodka’ pack…..who pile in a car and terrorise garden centres and pubs…..and as she fly’s off on another mission…Me Milo and Ruby take full advantage of the couches …makes a change from her discussing post mortem results….. while my eyes glaze over.

if game shows are anything to go on you see so many ex teachers on them who look nowhere close to retirement age. early retirement seems the thing in your proffesion.
