   Read about Jonny Walker, a real hero of the convoys whose statue is on the quayside on at Liverpool, who actually died from overwork in 1944.

The better half had a Great Uncle who was anengineer on the SS Ohio on its final voyage where it was basically stretchered into Valletta, Malta. Real hero as were all the crew.

My Grandad was on the Atlantic Convoys, until he was pensioned out with shell shock in '43 after the boat he was on got hit, and he was luckily on the half that was still afloat. Like a lot of vets- apparently he never talked about the horrors he witnessed.

It's staggering when you see the old footage of how brutal the weather conditions were- with 3 foot plus of solid ice covering the boats

Sadly, never had the honour of meeting him as he died in an industrial accident at the steel works in the mid 50's.

My father was R.N. Officer and worked on the Russian Convoy work, as well as other things.

He saw the Hood being sunk (imagine that) and was involved in the Bismarck chase.

He didn’t talk about it much but did do a programme once on Radio Tees, where he got interviewed - I have the cassette somewhere.

My dad came out of his apprenticeship at Richardson Westgarths in 1940 and straight into the Merchant Navy and stayed on with Ellerman Wilson Line after the war.
What people don’t know was if your merchant ship was sunk your pay stopped immediately because you weren’t on the job. Hard to believe..
I remember driving round the outside of Portsmouth Dockyard with my Dads brother who was in the Navy and he pointed out every point he used to sneak back in when trying to get in unnoticed.

funny about that comment of him not talking about it much. feel the most people talk about their so called experiances the less they have actually done. our army must have had more sergents than any other rank listening to old blokes talking about their war or the national service they did who all came out with three stripes. the one who said the least was a guy from the SAS in WW2.

You always talk like this when you can’t give a straight answer.
The diversion tactics never work on me, trying constantly by repetition is the oldest trick in the book…ever considered trying to cultivate a sense of humour instead of playing the victim…try it.

Had the honour of meeting one of the three survivors of HMS Hood - Robert Tilburn - he was working for the Inland Revenue in Middlesbrough at the time (as was a good mate of mine) - and on occasion we'd all meet for liquid lunches. My mate told me that Bob was a survivor of the Hood (he hadn't mentioned it - and why would he?) - anyway, being a daft lad I didn't believe my mate and asked Bob if it was true - yes, but he wasn't going to talk about it and if I had any questions I should b*gger off and read HMS Ulysses. I did as I was told - and what an eye opening book that is. Yep, those guys are real heroes.

Ask him how you would get pools out their current mess, it would probably involve Farage as chairman, Tommy Robinson as CEO and free season tickets in the Clarence Road for anyone wearing Khaki.

A classmate of mine at school’s dad was on HMS Hood but was transferred off before that fateful voyage…..wonder how you feel after the initial relief… but you must have had mates on board who wouldn’t be coming back.

R.I.P. indeed a wonderful and lovely Human Being.
My Form Teacher in my 1st year...class 1-6. sadx

wish i had been taught by someone who seems as popular as he was. unlike some i have never gone back to my old school after leaving or ever wanted to see an ex teacher ever again. that included a young first year art teacher i fancied who actually was less older than me than my first wife was but had zero confidence as a near 18 year old lad to ask her out after i left.
