I was amazed about the answer to this, what are the posters opinions ?
In football, if a direct free kick goes straight into a teams own goal what is awarded to the opposing team ?

Why would a player kick the ball into his own net.

Or is it a trick stupid question.

The player might pass the ball back to keeper who isn’t expecting it and it goes into goal, not a trick question, it was on The Chase. https://www.givemesport.com/football-qu ... warded.%22

its one of those questions about the laws of the game that possibly has never happened at any level of football. only used in a quiz about the laws. a question when you are taking the refs exam on the course that makes you realise you do not know everything and you start to concentrate. another one is the weight of the ball. it used to say the weight at sea level if that made any difference. however there is a tale whether true or not that years ago a referee at blackpool insisted on checking the match balls down on the front as they were arsey with him pre match. more likely something thats gone down in referees folk law rather than the truth. however with some of the jobsworths we get you could see that happening somewhere like rochdale.

I am sure it has happened, the free kick is awarded the player decides a pass back is the better option, the goalkeeper has his back to play and ball goes past him into the nef.

To answer the question I think the ref would give a corner.

correect. another law that gets fans confused is when an attacker in an off side position is played on side by a defender. this player has to make a pre determined attempt to play the ball to play the player on side. the ball just hitting him does not count.

Same from a throw in, if a defender throws the ball back and the keeper misses it it is a corner not an own goal so I believe.

correct. any tamworth fan will be able to tell you everything where long throws are concerned. the biggest weapon from the weapons.

I am at loss to see where the joke is Leggie, maybe I am just thick, then again you must be thick to not realise it was a serious question not a joke.

On Boxing Day at Darlo there was a bizarre own goal. Darlo had a throw in, a defender received the ball then passed back to Jameson (goalie) who wasn’t there.

Goal!

Pools do have a habit of ‘gifting’ goals.

watched rotherham play stockport yesteday dinner time. the rotherham equaliser was scored by an on side player but with one off side stood right in front of the keeper blocking his view. if thats not interfering with play then what is. again its interpretation yet again as a similar goal will be chalked off in another game. in both codes of rugby its either a foul or not unlike football where the ref on the day decides the outcome. time to take a leaf out of other sports i feel.
