Nearly all of the traditional Hartlepool familes are related to each other.
Lots if inbreeding went on. Most families based in Hartlepool for a fair few generations are all linked to one family or the other.
Mind you, it will be the same in most towns so nowt to worry about, happened mainly in the past except the Royal Family who kept the tradition going for a lot longer and of course, these days with our foreign invaders!

Marriage between cousins, even first cousins, has always been permitted, but marriage between in-laws (if a previous partner had died), who had no blood relationship, was not allowed. For example, until the law changed in 1907, a man was forbidden to marry his dead wife's sister.

wonder without the royal family the law might have been changed years back. Back in my teens i had a couple of real crackers as cousins but the thought of even asking them out never mind anything else never crossed my mind. Something i always thought was sick like incest in the closer family group. could appreciate my mates fancying my sister but the thought of me feeling like that would have sent me rushing for medical help.

Not necessarily in Hartlepool/ West Hartlepool’s case…3 out of 4 of my Grandparents all lived on and were born on the Town Wall…..two had Hartlepool surnames Hogg and Pounder but go back two generations and you find they came from Scotland or further north in England…one surname was Macternan which arrived in the 1860’s because West Hartlepool was a boom town…and they came down from Tyneside but had Irish origins.
Fact is about that time what seems so permanent now was a place on the move and expansion in industrial centres..even Hogg was Danish in origin….to my surprise,

do not know how it could have happened but i,ve got more polish blood in my veins than most of the polish football squad. its bloody odd as without knowing i was drawn to poles and their international team and my first proper girl friend danuta had polish parents.
