Has anyone else suffered. First time for me as i have been refused a short term car insurance by being over 75 by every insurer who does it. Young people can get it and non UK residents but living here all your life and holding a driving licence for 59 years excludes you. All i wanted it for was bringing a car back to my garage 13 miles away. got round it by paying a bloke who works for a garage i use who takes cars in for mot,s by joining the black economy for a couple of hours. no wonder there is so much bitterness around in this country.

Not sure it’s ageism but my bank of 30 years declined my request to increase my credit card limit by £3000 even though I had more than enough in my accounts to cover the increase, I like to use my CC when booking flights and hotels etc. rather than my Debit Card as a Credit Card provides more protection.

was a reason given for their actions.

The Independent did a survey of car insurance for the over 70s earlier this year: https://www.independent.co.uk/advisor/c ... -insurance

It agrees that "it can be hard to find temporary car insurance policies that allow for drivers over the age of 75."

I guess "hard" doesn't mean "impossible" - if you need it again it might be worh trying Age UK's insurance arm or Saga Insurance - or talking to a broker. That's assuming you haven't aready tried all 3...

All they said it was the underwriters decision,I wanted to know why the bank had information they were withholding from me.
Their parting words were I could make a complaint to The Financial Ombudsman but decided I would be wasting my time.
TBH if I was younger and in the position to do so I would have withdrawn all my funds and closed my accounts and gone else where.

Definitely ageism. Sounds like it went down to an individuals decision. An individual who has no idea that's the stats don't back up the idea that senior drivers are a significant risk.

In general a computer decides the application, I had make my application by telephone but all the rep. was doing was completing a tick box. There were no questions about any other accounts with the bank. The resulting questions were reviewed by the underwriters who then declined my request, I didn’t even get the chance to appeal, the decision was made and that was the end of it.

Tell them if they don't agree the increase within the next day you will move all your banking to another of the high street banks. Bet you they will quickly change their mind.

I did say that but they were not bothered one way or another, it’s my decision they said if I decided to do that.

I am sometimes referred to as "gammon" by certain people - particularly younger folk - which discriminates against both my age AND my skin colour.

I thought they were all being taught at school that they shouldn't do that kind of thing these days...

they do that and the media bang on and on about it unless its a small percentage of white british that it affects. No over 75,s seem fine for the rest but a sign no dogs, niggers and irish would get maximum publicity if that happened.

tried those two who got out of jail by just saying that they did not provide that service. there is only one local broker whose best quote for my yearly insurance was about 400 quid more than the one i got on my own so never bothered. if there is a problem with the over 75,s on the road then bring in a short driving test and a medical for us so we can be on a level playing field with the rest and anyone who should not be on the road have their licence revoked.
