A decision on the future of Hartlepool’s weekly outdoor market is set to be made with council chiefs saying it cannot continue as it is. I am not surprised, I went past last Thursday and there was less than a dozen stalls, gone are the days when it filled the full car park.

or make a big effort to revive it to buck the trend and not just something else we have lost for good. other towns have done it and others have allowed theirs to die. i,d guess now which one hartlepool will be. goodbye thursday market.

The council are talking about bringing in a private company to run the market like some other places have done, they couldn’t do any worse.

Who'd have thought that local councillors would ever close down a cash-in-hand operation..?

Clearly the bent bastards have got more lucrative "income-streams" these days...

Just let it go its terrible.

According to the MP the town is getting an extra £20 million. I hope its spent on demolition of the indoor market and CPOs of the towns grot spots and further demolition.

The town needs a fortune spent on it,it’s a dump, the worst I’ve ever known it.
I spent a few hours in Halifax last year, similar sized town, problems etc & their town centre is great.

it helped by them not being as keen to bring the bulldozers in and preserving and using there existing town centre and adding to it. in hartlepool they would have demolished their piece hall as some of their councillors actually wanted to do about the same time ours was raped by demolishion.

The architects and town planners in the 60/70s couldn’t see past high rise buildings and concrete town centres with multi storey car patsks.

with more than a little help from the governments at the time especially the wilson one. a total obsession with modernity at any cost and surprised york minster and the streets close to it lasted when they could have put a big version of middleton grange there for a proper yorvic centre.

I didn’t see Church Street mentioned in the article although they could use some of the money on the Old Shades Pub
The Marina is privately owned, there was talk of the council buying the car park but the owners wanted millions for it.
Artist’s impressions, the one showing Church Street all laid out like one abroad with tables and chairs for outdoor eating and drinking. They forgot the wind howls up Church Street from the Notth Sea.

More like that they couldn't see past the "success" of T Dan Smith and John Poulson - which seems to be the same blueprint being followed to this very day.

Ironic that the two original criminals (quite rightly) went to jail, unlike those swimming in the same tide for the next 60 years...
