I am surprised it took so long for it too happen, the old 42nd Street next or what used to be Paradise Alley in Park Road.

With any luck it’ll need demolishing.
Had some good times there as a kid, ah well.

Aye Snowy, my childhood Saturday mornings were spent in the Odeon and remembered fondly but things move on. Used to get my hair cut on the same block.

There is a list of properties in the town that need demolishing lets hope the building has had it.

what do people expect when things are just left to rot and get beyond repair to make it financially impossible to do anything with them. most likely after these years its arson and in this case whoever did it might have done the town some good.

But the part of the building which is listed is still standing, if it’s not in danger of collapsing how long will it be left there for ?

Let’s hope they save the two concrete friezes above the entrance doors.

They could have used them for the frontage of the new Leisure Centre instead of the modern day style of architecture.

The new leisure centre looks like another sheet metal retail unit, the architects said it reflected the area where it stands, but all there ever was there was railway sidings with wagons full of pit props….my great Uncle Jimmy was the tally man down there…..so is the building modelled on railway wagons sctatchinghead

it will reflect the architexture of today like the town centres of the 60,s did in their day. neither will last the time or be remembered with affection once they have gone. like or not places like the odean were in their hayday nothing really has improved on them in looks or function when its all about costs and function rather than looks in the years since.

There is a wall down at the back and bricks down at the front. Houses evacuated. As it's on a main road surely it has to come down.
Just been told the new leisure centre won't open till 2026!!!!

The easy part is the outside, the fun starts installing the ‘plumbing’ for the pools and that’s just for starters.
Just over a year seems very reasonable in terms of what’s involved.

It looks completely knackered now. Someone’s had a drone up and done a good job of videoing how it looks from all directions. Demolition looks inevitable.

This guy known as the Silver Fox does some excellent video and photography of the tpwn and mostly paints a good picture of the town. Unfortunately in this case he cannot.

Other suggestions for demolition are.

42nd
5th Avenue
Clansman and corridor where the Post Office was.
Indoor Market and area.
Engineers.

Any others?

I have just been on Historic England website and both the Odeon and the shops at the north end are listed grade 2. They are listed separately so lets just hope if the cinema gets demolished so will the shops.
I have just heard on the radio that they cannot get into the building to see what started the fire as its too dangerous. Let me help..........it was a flame so get the wrecking ball in!!!!!!!!!

As much as we all want derelict buildings brought back into use when they've been empty as long as this then I have mixed feelings. I'm sort of happy if it can be totally demolished but I hate the scrotes who've done it. They're probably the the 10 to 13 year olds I saw with the petrol cans climbing out of the Wesley the other week. These underclass kids are destroying our town in so many ways.

it is usually kids but not always. over the years after planning permission has been refused buildings seem to go on fire and get demolished to ease the way for the next application to go through. really doubt kids are involved with them and more likely its fire for cash.

Some people have said it was an insurance job.But can you get insurance for an empty derelict building. If so would not the cost be enormous?

people call em insurance jobs but they are not. its a way to get a cunning plan in force if nobody is prepared to do a thing about a rotting building that without bringing back into use has only got nostalgia value.

From my own experience of leaving my property empty for more than a certain amount of time the insurance premiums soared. Why would an insurance company cover a building like the Odeon knowing it was a prime target for vandals, there certainly wouldn’t be valuable contents inside it.

According to the free paper it was planned to be demolished to make way for a £10 million "community park".
Whats that??

Are they knocking down the entire area….not a bad idea, especially the top end of York Road looking a bit grotty.

It might include the old leisure centre and mill house pub that's shut?

Looking at this drone shot I think we can safely say it will be demolished,
