Just get yourself into Hull city centre whenever you've got some free time. It's had a massive face lift in connection with UK City of Culture and the Old Town and Fruit Market are stuffed with good boozers and places to eat.

I live 20 minutes away from Hull but I have only been to Hessle to watch the lad play football.

Hull is just a bit of a shit hole full stop so doesn't really matter where you are.

One place you MUST try though is Dope Burger. Heaviest burger you will ever pick up and take a bib because you'll be wearing most of it. Honestly though, they are quality.

Boothferry Park was on Hessle Road but Hessle is a bit further out - near the Humber Bridge. No idea what its like nowadays but it used to be an alright little place.

get digs in the holiday inn or travelodge on Ferensway, you are then only 15 mins from Hessle along Anlaby Road and are close to decent boozers and restaurants etc and a big tesco to get food in. Don't get digs in Hessle, it's full of rarfs and is horrible.

if it's the "Hull end" of hessle it's a bit 'orrible, looks a bit like Wembley, just a high street of pound shops and booze busters, but the other end of Hessle towards the Humber Bridge/North Ferriby is quite nice. Like a lot of the places on the outskirts of Hull they are being swallowed up by urban sprawl.

Am thinking of the Village Hotel - gym, swimming pools, jacuzzis etc plus a restaurant and a bar.

Looks close to the Tesco you mention too.

Each to his own I suppose. Your opinion of the likes of Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Sunderland doesn't bear thinking about if you rate Hull as a shit hole!

yeah it's ok there, if it's the place I'm thinking about though (near Arco?) you're out on a bit of a limb though if you get bored, there's nothing much around there.

Right well the village hotel is probably best for you then. It's just a hotel off an A road though so as long as you don't expect there to be loads of boozers nearby then it'll be ok.

Swimming pool and gym and a few quiet sodas will do me.

Is that the shitty end of Hessle then?

the main drag, hessle road, is up from where you are which has the plethora of pound shops/booze busters etc I mentioned and a couple of very dodgy pubs. If you fancy a drink you are better off going into Hull city centre. There is however a big ASDA on the roundabout up from you (where you can practice self service?)

Try the Tiger at Cottingham where written on the bog wall was the best bit of graffiti i have ever seen.

Better than Newton Aycliffe, not as bad as Immingham. As has been said , go into Hull, though even Northern cities are quiet during the week these days , student nights apart.

Just base yourself in Beverley. Drive into Hull only when absolutely necessary.

Fuck! Really? You think Hartlepool, Middlesbro and Sunderland are better than Hull? Jeez, you must've been to Swanland then. Either there or North Ferriby where the cash is.

And I'm hardly a snob. I was born in Gipton in Leeds which is rough as arseholes.

Obviously, all was said a bit in jest and Hull is no different to most northern cities. It has its really nice parts and its fucking horrible parts. The people make a place what it is really. Hull isn't really my favourite place though is probably a fairer description.

R Lass’ parents live near Hessle, I did a bit of Christmas shopping there.

The card factory was a decent size, and not too busy. 10/10

Wilkos was below par, but nothing you can really complain about. 6/10

Greggs was a bit scruffy, and none of the staff seemed to know what they were doing. 5/10

The Pound Stretcher was appalling though. I can’t remember the last time I went to a Pound Stretcher, so it might just be a common theme, but I certainly won’t be visiting that one in a hurry again. 2/10

So if you were planning on doing your Christmas shopping whilst you’re there, you’ll probably end up being a bit disappointed.

Some quality Christmas shopping there! , don't you like your relatives?

I was amused by the palm trees at the prison gates as I drove out of the docks once.

Did the Humber Bridge to Transporter Bridge cycle ride a few years ago. Started in Hessle. Seemed pleasant enough then

He could have a trip out to Orchard Park and Bransholme for a bit of culture then into town to The Hull Cheese for the craic.
