So no penalty for going down then if someone was waiting for the end of the season... That's not good.

Parachute payments are a complete nonsense in my opinion.

Especially those from the Premiershit.

Every player at every club should have an appropriate wage reduction built into their contract that is triggered as soon as relegation is confirmed.

Parachute payments give an unfair advantage to those relegated.

The parachute payments are only a stay of execution in that case though. If York, for example, go to the Conference North I'd think some of the staff would get the bullet, just 12 months later than they would've done. It's a strange one and probably unique. If any clubs tumble down the divisions there comes a point when either staff get made redundant or have to accept wage reductions.

I also don't think they are being penalised, it's just the nature of the beast in the same way that people working in, for example, the construction industry. One of my mates is a vehicle builder/welder/joiner/whatever and he's regularly praying for the company to secure the next big contract. They don't win it, they lay people off.

Not great but the way it is. No one is ever 100% safe in any job and for the vast majority, their continued employment is linked almost entirely to the success of their employer.

I was watching a programme from the fifties where an explainer was on about the maximum wage. Top player goes in to negotiate his contract and comes out to tell one of the players he's on £20 a week and £10 a week in the close season. One of the players asks him what he got and walks in to see manager. He's offered £16 a week and £7 a week in the close season.....he queries the amount of money offered for the close season and quotes the amount offered to the star player. The manager replies he's the star player and better than you, that's why.
The player replies, not in the close season he isn't!

No it isn't but the point I'm making is that it's a relatively insecure job because construction work is only available when there's something that needs building/repairing. Anyway, just replace 'construction industry' with any industry where your next pay day can be uncertain or has a decent chance of redundancy. Steel possibly.

Again, didn't consider this side of the argument as I was looking at it purely from the negative side but this is of course very, very relevant and important. That said, if every player had to have a clause in their contract, regardless of the club they play for, forcing a reduction in wage when relegation was confirmed it would be an accepted norm and would help safeguard the club. The finances could be worked out in such a way that non-playing staff's wages wouldn't be adversely affected.

I think there are examples where the parachute payments have definitely been a huge contributor to a club making a swift return to the division they just left but I agree that it isn't necessarily an enormous advantage. The bar codes are the best current example.......whereas Villa are not...

Now obviously I would never want staff at a football club to lose their livelihoods but I do think it is the nature of the industry to expect some turmoil and uncertainty. The number of staff that a club employs or can employ will always be linked to how they are doing in the league.

Football should be seen as a public service to a certain extent and jobs should attract the same securities but that will never happen, it's a fucking business
