Aye I know a lad who lives in Elwick, said it was closing few weeks back. He reckons everybody goes in the Spotted cow so they weren't really getting the business

extortionate rents and beer prices from greedy pub owning companies, and the grasping companies all along the supply chain, have done for the pub trade. Sadly there is no regulator to stop the money sucking practices that have been going on for years, which has caused a massive number of pubs to close needlessly.
The pubs were largely remortgaged on the back of big investment from finance companies etc, tenants were left to pick up the bill with massively increased rents and beer prices - while the people at the top of the food chain in that industry made a killing and bled the industry dry. The pub tenants who couldn't make ends meet, but with nothing else to lose, just posted the keys back and basically said, "sue me," and if that happened were forced to declared themselves bankrupt in any case. I wasn't in a position to do that, with a house and a large pension fund which was up for grabs if I terminated the contract with them - they are ruthless, and exploitation doesn't begin to describe what these people do!!!! I've had to struggle through the last 5 years paying off debts accrued through the pub, there's still 2 to go, but then I'm home free (to the tune of an extra 8 grand a year in my pocket - I kid you not)

THEN you have business rates, and sky tv's pricing structure affiliated to the business rates - which amounts to a sickening amount of money per year.

They all make an assumption you are coining it in on the side somehow, so you end up doing it anyway but all it does is minimise the losses!!!!!!

A national disgrace which has needed intervention for years but nobody gets involved. Pubs, especially country pubs, are a way of British life - but they will all be gone in the next 25 to 30 years if people don't do something about it soon.

Lets pick on the small guy, he can't do anything about it. Financial bullying at it's finest there Parmo. Seems like there are no policies and procedures in place to protect the landlords. Sounds like a nightmare to be a pub owner, especially with no regulations in place to protect agaist what seems like oppressive practices from the pub owning companies. A license to rip the landlords completely off, not right. As for village pubs, you cannot beat them. Hopefully their will be change in the industry so such establishments can survive.
