Here is a brilliant thing to do from the BBC:
National Moth Night: 18th-19th SeptemberCelebrate moths and contribute to Britain's largest survey of species on the wing!
Throughout the British Isles members of the public are encouraged to see what moths they can find in their chosen location raising the profile of these intriguing, attractive creatures.
For the first time ever National Moth Night will take place over two nights in 2009. This will enable a special experiment to learn about moth migration by tracking colour-marked moths.
To take part you could set up a moth-trap in your garden, keep an eye out at home or attend a public event. Wherever you are, watch out for the colour-marked moths. Should you be lucky enough to find a colour marked moth submit your photograph to the National Moth Night website for verification.
The moth records from participants across the country will be pooled into a
fascinating summary of what was on the wing, and published in the journal Atropos.
