Anyone else think we'd be better leaving a couple of players near the halfway line when we're defending? Say Grey and Campbell, it would force the opposition to leave 3 back and reduce crowding in our box and means they could only have a maximum of 6 in and around our goal area. It's not as if those 2 are going to be winning headers is it?
Also, when we've got opportunities to get the ball into the box from corners and free kicks why do we take so many short?

I have always maintained that, put a couple of pacy players one out wide and one on the halfway line. I don’t mind short corners, you can then put in a low cross with pace which could rebound anywhere instead of a floating corner which can easily be defended.

I'd go with Grey and Charman. Pace on the break is what frightens defenders. They don't have to be up near the halfway line, just in space to pick up headed clearances and punches out.

like a lot with football we are just following the fashion of the day. some premier or international side will eventually leave 2 or 3 of their least defensive players up front and if they are proved a success as a team, everyone else down to the sunday league will follow.

And now we have these shit corners which rarely produce goals like they did in the 70s 80s and part of the 90s.

Pools where extremely vulnerable again everytime a long ball came into our box - resulting in a goal (disallowed and line clearance)

not sure what happened but for some reason Barnet had pinpoint accuracy with every ball which we couldnt deal with. I maybe used to the teams at this level not being able to cross a ball but for some reason Barnet got it right at the weekend and anymore of them we would of really been in trouble - was so glad to see the final whistle at the weekend just cos of this.

Tamworth love a ball in the box so have to be sharper this weekend

must have left early then and missed the chance we created that waterfall will know he should have done better with his header.

But the chances we create from set pieces are still few and far between. When you've got Parkes, Waterfall, Mani D, Charman in the box short kicks ending up without getting the ball in the box are a criminal waste. It's NL not Champions League, poorer defenders and keepers with the ball pinging about in the box seems to end up with goals against us but we rarely use that tactic. How many goals have we scored from set pieces this season, Parkes has 1 but I can't remember too many more.
Percentage football beats pretty non effective football in the right circumstances.

we always seem to over complicate things instead of playing the percentages and you are correct in this. aim for the area just short of the penalty spot and fight it out. too short or over hit ones are just a waste of time.

Current fashion now is crowd the 6 yard box out, surround the keeper etc, as I said before pull 2 out of defence ready for a quick break which would relieve some of the crowd.
The other tactic which is no longer employed is a defender on each post for corner,kicks, you never see it now.

players on the post are the best positions for players who cannot defend and can get in the way of those who can if you really need everyone back for corners.
