Very sad news about two men drowned today attempting to help a couple of children who got into difficulties in the sea.

The kids survived but the brave lads who went into the sea to help them didn't. R.I.P.

Aye…I was down there…..despite the sunny sky, the wind a brisk North Easterly and deceptively cold in the water….oddly, even the dogs were restless down there yesterday.
A crying shame, losing your life trying to rescue someone,….you have to admire and respect their intentions, so sad it ended up like this.
Oddly the beach along the front at Seaton, which is normally flat, since the storm earlier in the year, is now a series of channels visible on the incoming tide and at high water, may effect the currents flow.

Hats off and RIP to 2 brave men indeed.

My grandparents used to live in Seaton Carew and as a small child it was considered safe by my parents to swim there, we were encouraged to go in.

Depends on the weather and where you swim, Snowy will know better but I was encouraged to go into the watering front of the main promenade area but never at either end of the beach.
I swam in the sea most summer days as a kid but that was from the beaches on the Headland which were considered safe if the sea was calm.

know it was 70 years ago now but was wlking in the sea at seaton with my old man. he was in front of me and just dissapeared for few seconds. told me not to move and he took me back to the beach. said he just dropped off a ledge of sand

Always use the area where there’s lifeguards….are there any there still…..?

There was a drowning near the Staincliffe a couple years back when a man was caught in a Riptide, remember being there with the Helicopter on Seaton Green waiting for a patient who wouldn’t be coming.
A riptide was possibly the cause as the tide was down burst rocks were just under the surface.

The beach is only manned by lifeguards during the 6 weeks holidays. Blows my mind and could have helped prevent the tragedy yesterday. A friend of ours lost her friend 21 years ago in similar circumstances and has been campaigning for lifeguards for longer periods she has made a petition for on duty lifeguards to go beyond the 6 weeks holidays.

I tried to sign this three times but it takes me through a load of pages asking for a donation, then other stuff, then flips off so, unfortunately unsuccessful.

Thing is they have a see saw of what we need and don’t need….and generally the don’t needs get through.
We used to have the Coast Watch Station at Middleton manned by volunteers, now scrapped so the nesting birds could have their feathery HMO’s built (the Tory’s in Goverment insisted on it)..another service lost.

Even a May to October life guard service could be managed surely….?

Weekends, Bank Holidays, and school holidays should be covered imo.

This tragic event is getting even sadder as more details are released of the brave souls who lost their lives.

I was under the impression that Seaton was relatively “safe” from shelves and riptides and it was further up the coast at the likes of Crimdon where there was more chance of them?

They’ve spent months down the marina redoing a stretch of road for whatever purpose…oddly it seemed a perfectly serviceable road…..I used it….that would have paid for lifeguards.

Interesting the government want Coastguard Rescue Officers who currently get paid for call outs (min 3 hours per call at under NMW) to become unpaid volunteers. It's reckoned at least 50% will just quit.
I guess you can put a price on safety around our coasts, yet millions spent on "rescuing" the boat people.

For the ammount of C tax the civic centre takes in the services are an absolute disgrace.

Beaches should be life guarded from May to September.

Roads n Pavements are covered in litter dogshit n broken glass.
The lads at work are suffering from a puncture pandemic.

Non stop fly tipping shit on the Oakesway estate.

Horrendous behaviour from the culprits but the council just turn a blind eye to it.

Probably don't want to fund these problems and prioritise there early retirements.

Roll on land levy tax.
Mite as well pay 60% less if we getting no value anyway.

Add the £153 million we just have given to Pakistan yet they won’t accept the grooming gang fella back just released from prison. Do Pakistan who have nuclear weapons require hand outs, what do the UK receive in return ?
Jamieland, could do worse, no Council Tax here but we do have Life Guards on most tourist beaches and different coloured flags warning about dangers of rough seas albeit people don’t always adhere to them, the Life Guards react and tell them to get out of the water. We do have fatalities though mostly Thais as swimming isn’t one of their best attributes.

i,d guess there would be life guards on the beach if we pa to go on and show proof of payment. they. have duel job, to save lives an get revenue from the non payers. a cross between baywatch and parking wars.
