My wife and I were recently in a fish and chip "restaurant" in Cromer, Norfolk called "Number 1 Cromer". It was the only one evident as we walked around so decided to give it a try.
We ordered Haddock, chips and mushy peas and a pot of tea for two.
In places the Haddock was just batter and the chips were no where near hot and tasteless.
When asked if everything was to our liking, I explained my concern but was effectively shrugged off. The bill was exactly £49.....FORTY NINE ENGLISH POUNDS.
Som my fellow illustrious bunkerites I'm giving you the heads up.....SWERVE !!!!!!!

more or less given up with fish and chips now. cafe prices for them are outragious and its cheaper going into an indian or a chinese for a takeaway. its not as if they are boiling hot anymore and you had to blow on the chips like we once had to do. mind you norfolk fish and chips are certainly not the top of my list and only the ones in the coventry area are worse.

Tourist traps are the same all over the country. The two harbour front restaurants in Amble (owned by the same company) are charging £23 for haddock, chips and mushy peas. Drinks extra! No problems with the quality of the food, but the price has almost doubled in the last couple of years.

As long as people are prepared to pay the rising the prices the more they will keep going up, they went up when the Ukrainian conflict kicked off due to rising gas prices, the gas price dropped soon after by 50%, the price never came down again. This time same again excuse being the Middle East Conflict pushed gas prices up, surely the increase was built in during the Ukrainian conflict as the price of them was never reduced ?

The best chippy in the world is in Esh Winning. Used to go every week as it’s the next village along from me but it’s now £13.50 for fish and chips and we get 3 portions. It just feels wrong paying that every week so it’s now just once a month sadly.

Fish prices (wet fish at the quayside) have gone up about 30% following recent rises in Minimum Wage and fuel prices. Flour, cooking oil are up in price. Energy prices for chippys are up as are staffing costs. Not sure if the chippys are making more profit, but there's plenty going out of business which would suggest they're not.

They do. Coal powered ovens as well. Best I’ve ever had. It’s funny cos they are so nice and I pay more in a restaurant for average food but it’s the principle of paying twice as much as a few years ago. Cutting off my nose type of thing.

Thanks Porter's porter, will be going to Esh Winning in the next few weeks, so will pop in for some tasty fish and chips.

My beef is mainly about the quality as the prices are plain to see in most establishments before you order. I like a fish and chip meal now and again and if some establishments take a pride in their presentation and quality of ingredients and cooking prowess, why can't others. For example what degree of skill is needed to at least serve the meal hot.
If Mr porter's local chippy really deserves the accolades he gives them then £13-50 is not out of the way but I
can see where he's coming from if he's buying for three.
The problem stands out more when you start comparing fish and chips on holiday with what they cost last year and it's not just fish and chips, it's everything else.
And to top it all this bunch of Amateurs at Westminster are talking about introducing a holiday tax.
We'll not be able to cross the doorstep at this rate. They'll be taxing shagging next !!!!!!!

UK citizens holidaying in the UK should not pay any taxes on their holidays.
However I can see the reasoning behind taxing any tourists visiting.

Take Zimbabwe, yes it was a few years back but there were 2 rates, one for the locals and one for the tourist.
Tourists had to pay in US dollars, locals used the local currency.

Also a lot of other places add a service tax to your bill, hotels I have visited have done this and probably still do.

This thread has made me realise it's months and months since Mr. Bluestreak posted anything. It's not like him not to chip in to a conversation about grub.

Maybe he owns a chippy and keeping a low profile …and is off on a cruise on his yacht on the profits.

question i always ask re fish and chip prices is why have they gone up more than the chinese, indian and pizza/burger places have. there overheads must be the same if they are take away or sit in. like pubs are chippy,s shutting down because of the lack of customers who are prepared to pay ott prices for something that once was coppers.

since covid its something i have been constantly doing. could afford what they are charging but i,m not going to. like holidays and businesses trying to get back what they lost when we were restricted. not our faults and this mean old bugger is not going to help em. been around the yorkies too long to chuck money away as if its going out of fashion. same with petrol since it went up 20% we are using our cars less and i packed in the fags to reduce what rachel gets out of this house. if we all played the game of starving the labour party things could change.

They’ve all been milking us since Covid, they do want their lost profits back, but we’ll pick up the bill.

Fish and Chips is too expensive now. Occasionally I drive through Masham (quirky little town between Ripon and Bedale) and the chip shop there does a small FnC for £8.50. Hot, tasty fish well cooked, not huge but big enough.

possibly that small portion was what was called the regular portion a few years back. feel the portion sizes have grown especially the number of chips served to make up for the cost. the large specials are close to some food challenge not helped by youtube food surveyers who insist on mushy peas and curry sauce on top. its the same with the breakfasts when the greedy buggers have the belly buster type you do not know if they eat it all all not. once the yanks were laughed at because of there big portions and bigger bellies. we are quickly catching them up.

Smaller suits me anyway (had one on Friday) It meant I could still function! If I go big it knacks me and I need a sleep.

How much does fish and chips cost now at Almighty Cod in Seaton Carew. Will be there from August 30 for a few weeks . Last summer in blazing June really enjoyed them .

Was about £12 last summer and the portions were massive.
Easily enough for 2.
Deffo a major challenge to do the full lot on your own.

I think i maybe bought a half lot and it was big enough for me

think the half lot deal at youngs is about a tenner now. ended up getting a spam fritter and chips for £5.50 the price of the half lot meal deal a few years back. i,m sure verrells were a bit cheaper earlier in the year.

£11.50 a couple years ago, second from last time I was there, they appeared to be trying to justify the price by giving you a boatload of chips.

wait till the price of spuds go sky high and the buggers will be counting them on then.
