Casual racism on a grand scale when I was a kid. These two comments were regularly said to me by my grandma.

yes and nobody thought anything about them even if they had only ever seen a white face in their lives.

My Dad worked with Lascars from Yemen for years on his various ships in the engine room and Chinese stewards and thought very highly of them compared to a couple of our neighbours who he said wouldn’t work in an iron lung.
