Perry Henzell, the legendary filmmaker has died in Jamaica at the age of 70, after losing a seven-year battle with cancer.

Annotto Bay-born Henzell is best known as the director/producer of the classic 1972 film 'The Harder They Come', which starred Jimmy Cliff and subsequently propelled the singer into superstardom.

Mr Henzell started off in London at the BBC and, after some years there, came back to Jamaica where he started Vista Productions, in Kingston, making commercials.

The Jamaican Gleaner reported news of Mr. Henzell's death, after his daughter Justine Henzell allerted them of the sad news.

"He's a pioneer. He certainly was the father of the film industry in Jamaica. He was a proud Jamaican," Ms. Henzell told the Gleaner. She added that her family would have liked him to remembered as a true legend.
