Just read in the express that there is a move to go beyond eye tests after a certain age to the outright ban on anyone over 80 to hold a driving licence. A blanket ban is surely discrimination but guess what most uk drivers are white british who fall into that catogary therefore that will not count.

I'm pretty sure it's scaremongering, I read something last week about a potential challenge to the eyesight rule as being discriminatory too which seems correct imo. Also need to take into account older folk are much more likely to have annual eye tests given that they're free than younger folk, eyesight determination isn't just an age thing. Every stat says that younger male drivers are the highest risks on the road not poorly sighted oldsters.

I have an eyesight check every January simply because I am aware that deterioration can happen quickly at my age. I think that is sensible and responsible. The test is free so it only costs me my time. I drive carefully and mainly within the speed limit and don't tear arse about. On long journeys I tend to pay attention to my concentration and plan the necessary stops.
In general driving standards appear to be getting worse and it's no coincidence that insurance premiums are mainly at their highest amongst the young and frequent offenders.
It seems to be common practise these days to pick on the elderly and Reeves seems to have an inbuilt hate of grey hair.

Is it part of the master plan for a brave new green world where everyone except the elite use public transport and put us in our place….?

If we can persuade a few elderly muslims to complain about this, I am pretty sure the government minister concerned will siht himself and do an immediate u turn.

found my insurance premiums have got higher since reaching 75 causing me to get cars in a lower insurance group. always give myself more time than necessary on long journeys instead of rushing about at the last minute. one way to get more green than red traffic lights for a start. think older drivers are more likely to do this and plan the journey rather than the young who rely on phones , sat navs and the speed there car can go.

There should be mandatory eye tests for everyone say every 5 years, how many people ever visit an optician after passing their test, your eyesight can deteriorate without you actually realising it.

like for HGV and PSV drivers who have to have them yearly plus a medical once they reach 60. if you want your licence to be renewed and need it people would be prepared to pay it. the costs could easily be got back if insurance companies were more fairer to us old gits and reduce the amount we have to pay as we could prove our medical fitness to drive.

I've reached the point, after a lifetime of pretty much respecting 'authority', where the police, local authorities, ministries of whatever can go a taking a flyng f*ck until they've addressed the number of clowns on the roads without licences, with bans, with drugs or alcohol in them and with no insurance. Starmer, go sort out the proper problems and leave us old, law-abiding duffers alone!

more interested in pushing 20mph permanent speed limits and making money from law abiding people going a few mph over the speed limit when there is no real danger by doing it. longer bans for those catogaries you state plus jail time if repeating them especially lack of insurance. you never hear the road safety lobby banging on about that. its just about speed in their eyes.
