I miss the days when Horden posted on here. He would have told it straight. The Tories cannot be trusted.

"Touché" suggests that we were at crossed purposes, when my intent was that of supporting you as a fellow cynic. Your observations are usually spot-on or fairly accurate, hence the Shaw quote.

I did enjoy one that you replied with mind.

Deepest apologies, it’s how I interpreted the quote, my mistake. banghead

Mind you there was one Shaw quote that made me smile …..Put an Irishman on a spit and you’ll always find another Irishman to turn the handle’.

You did…it’s May 3rd.
That said, has anyone studied the Ward maps for Hartlepool because they must have been drawn up by a company in China by someone who has never heard of the UK …for a laugh.
Our Ward was Burn Valley/Foggy Furze for years, then some genius redrew the boundaries and for some utterly bizarre reason are now in the same ward as St Patrick’s shops and the top of Owton Manor miles away as a curving swathe has encroached upon us by some fool with a shakey hand…..voting now pointless as the
Councillors came nowhere near us at Election time, no show , no vote….their thoughts are about problem behaviour up at the frontier at the Manor.

The Fens & Greatham is bizarre too with the southern side of Seaton Lane down towards Golden Flatts in the F&G ward.

Googled George Orwell, never read any of his books and not likely to eitherr, way over my head, going back to the thread touched a raw nerve about what Snowy ?
George Orwell was a novelist, essayist and critic best known for his novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. He was a man of strong opinions who addressed some of the major political movements of his times, including imperialism, fascism and communism.

Surely an apprenticeship would entail going on something like day release to somewhere like the Tech. How else could you get qualifications like City and Guilds for example. Boss Howard would have to be in there somewhere.

Exactly Mr Derwent.
I passed the 11 plus and was at the Technical High School for Boys for five years under the steel rod of Boss Howard….When I left school I got an apprenticeship with a National company….the apprenticeship lasted four years and required one day a week for four years at College to attain your City and Guild's qualification at Middlesbrough.
Never heard of anyone not going to day release, because without your City and Guilds who can verify if you ever served an apprenticeship.

You 2 haven’t been about very much obviously, I passed my 11 plus then went on to a High School then Technical College for Day Release for a couple of years when I started my apprenticeship. The company wouldn’t pay for anymore Day Release but I had enough City and Guilds to qualify as a tradesman. The older tradesmen I worked with never went to a Tech College they didn’t exist all those years ago, they were assessed by the company after a 5 year apprenticeship who deemed what their rate of pay would be.Over the years I had many titles ranging from a tradesman, Supervisor, Technician, in my last
I have worked with tradesmen, engineers etc with degrees qualifications as long as your arm who could not put a nut on a bolt or change a light bulb.
A good tradesman has never a problem finding a job, your reputation goes before you,how many of the old joiners, plumbers, plasters etc ever went to college, they learned their skills on the job not a classroom.
In my day after a year or so as an apprentice you were given a drawing and told do the installation as per the drawings,no amount of college time teaches you any practical stuff like that.

A few people who think they know me don’t know what I’ve really done in my life, so stop supposing…
So…..What High School was that?
City and Guilds course are a four year slog, you put the full four years in with qualifying exams every two years, you can’t have part of it it, it’s like a doctor saying they only did half their training….l.

Not interested what you have done in your life Snowy but you appear to be very interested about what I have done, what school I went to etc., I can forward you a copy of my CV if you like, I don’t think I have any school reports though.
I only did a 2 year City and Guilds in fact it might only have been a year, I passed the A with distinction, I still have the cert. along with my Craftsman’s Certificate which I received when I was 21. I was on full tradesman’s rate at 20 though.
There was a B & C City and Guilds Course but I never like many others did it as it meant losing a days pay or night school, I don’t recall any of my colleagues of similar age going down that road, they all ended up making a good living qualifications or no qualifications. In all my years I was never asked to show any certs only a Grading Card which was a bit like an ID Card.

I think our Jamie takes good old fashioned bullshit to levels I have never imagined.
The Tech in Hartlepool was in existence when I was 11 in 1955 and long before that so his claim that techs didn't exist when he was a lad is top of that bullshit list.
Having stated in one post that techs didn't exist, in a subsequent post he states he went to High School and then a Tech.
More bullshit.

They used to say to be a good liar you need a good memory.
I wonder if Jamie was one of the 240,000 who attended the Man Utd FA Cup game.

If the number of people who said they attended the match were there, they’d still be queueing for the football specials at the bus stop now.

Never told a lie in my life, liberal with the truth, i have a great memory, why should I tell a lie,I didn’t know the Vic could hold 240000 fans ? The 1988 game I was working offshore at the time, the 1957 game my Mam wouldn’t allow me to go as I was too young.

Snowy what doesn’t add up and why does it matter what college I went to, do you want my life story ? I was in a totally different trade to you, fact I was a time served fully qualified Electrician working through the years up to Engineering status.just before I retired.I didn’t nick off of any course as they weren’t mandatory and the company valued you more on the job rather than worthless qualifications, you don’t learn nought sat in a classroom.
To get the full C&G took 5 years part time in the 60s and it didn’t make any difference to your income or finding a job. You could then go to uni for 3 years full time for a degree in Electrical Engineering unfunded with no employment guaranteed after getting a degree and being skint at 23 years old.

I hope my reply has stopped you scratching your head or you will have no hair left !

I worked with loads of Electricians over the years from Hartlepool and none of them went to the Tech College, as I said at the end of the 5 year apprenticeship the company assessed you and granted you the qualification along with a certificate as an Electrician.

By yours and Snowys comments I have the impression the 2 of you worked for the same company all your life and have no idea what the Electrical Contracting industry is all about and how it operates.

Not really, you’ve just made me more inquisitive and sceptical.
You reference to ‘worthless qualifications’ and ‘ don’t learn nought sat in a classroom’ is one of the most arrogant and crass statements I’ve heard for many a long day…..
You say you were in a completely different trade to me…but I never ever mentioned what my trade was once…… but it was also electrical…did you serve your time in Kazakhstan…?
I love the idea you were so good you were beyond being taught anything by anyone, But the man who can’t be taught, is his own worst enemy…it’s a lifetime of learning.
You say you were in a completely different trade to me…I never mentioned my trade once…..but it was also electrical. Touché.
Studying for City and Guilds was mandatory, overtime for Apprentice’s very, very rare …..or to put it crudely I’d have been out on my arse when my caring employer found out if I copied your example. What sort of employer, apart from cowboys, would tolerate apprentices who did just what they wanted.
An Apprentice without formal qualifications is just someone saying they are what they say they are without any documentary proof…. CV must be interesting.

I’m still puzzled how in your previous post you were all over the place about City and Guilds courses in your knowledge of them and now have an answerI can only assume you did some research overnight….?

The word ‘Tech’ was only ever used in Hartlepool for the ‘Technical High School for Boys’….anyone going for day release called it ‘going to the college or the F E’…

So you didn’t live in Hartlepool then, so which out of town ‘Tech’ was that then..I travelled to the Boro for mine?

Five year apprenticeships?…. Who was your site engineer Ismabard Kingdom Brunel sctatchinghead
Can’t speak for Derwent, but done the rounds for a bit of excitement and settled for boredom in my late thirties when the wife told me to….even went back to college and studied English Literature and History..most enjoyable…well to me it was.

Jamie's shovel is getting bigger and the hole he's digging even biggererererer. One thing for sure he would have made a decent navvy.
The problem is he deviates too much from the script he is supposed to follow but I've no doubt his knuckles have been rapped for that.
Sandie Shaw did have big feet though.

you ex apprentices do not know how lucky you were. those of us who had to study for accountancy or institute of transport qualifications like me had to do it all in our own time because there were no courses for day release. a sodding correspondance course that i never finished because i had other interests where booze, birds and cars came first and the last thing i wanted to do was bookwork for a couple of hours at night. after 2 years i could not face another two even if i did pass the exam first time with no guarentee of getting a better job at the end of it.
