Why do the bloody media seem to think that the world and it’s donkey can all work from home….they go on and on about it yet it’s a minority, as most jobs of any real importance require your services outside the computer console in your back bedroom…..any job that can be done in your pyjama’s at home is probably being lined up for transfer to an Indian call centre eventually.

Every time it’s mentioned I think of the times I used to be sat in work on standby on Xmas day with my oppo while the highlight was the chief coming round to have a 5 minute chat and a cigar and neither of us smoked. banghead

it is the real world to them because its all they know and the same with there circle of friends. same as it annoys me when people in 7 day a week jobs think they should get special priveledges for working weekends or not working at all when nearly all my working life me and others just took weekend and holiday work in our stride and just part of the job we signed up to do.

W.E. and overtime working should be banned and start paying people real wages so they don’t have to subsidise their wages with overtime.

If you’re on continuous 24/7 processes you can’t shut down for the weekend or stop the trains and buses working and a thousand other things…..No weekends and overtime is for comfy jobs…of which we have too many.

Weekend working is absolutely essential to our way of life. Would you shut down all the essential services for over 48 hours at five o'clock on a Friday afternoon. Very clever Jamie. Have another think mate.

Haven't some of us old retirees got another unpaid job looking after our grandkids?

Taking them & fetching them from school, then looking after them until Mum & Dad get home from work.

Wouldn't want any other way though.

Got the badge that says - Only good dads make good grandads

Nurses don’t just take blood or give injections, they operate the same way as Doctors, Para Medics are now staffing GP Surgeries.
If blood or vaccinations are required they make an appointment to go to the surgery.

what the big problem is that people are quite happy doing shift work on a 24 hour 7 day a week job as long as there are no weekend. wank holiday or late shifts and only like the 9 to 5 one. a few years ago the chief constable of northamptonshire said they had trouble recruiting when recruits were told there would have to work 5 days out of 7 and some other period of the day that didn,t finish at 5. what do these people think the job is all about when they apply.

I criticised W.E. working because it is used in some cases to top up people’s income, favourite saying in my day was what’s the hours never mind the rate and is Sunday on (double time) ?

Many moons ago I worked at the first UK self service petrol garage in Harlow. They employed 3 shift Managers who each had their own cashier.

The garage was open 7 days a week during the hours of 6am until 10pm. You worked first day 6-2, second day 2-10 and third day off. Yes you could work both Saturday & Sunday some weeks but you would be off Friday & Monday. I quite enjoyed this work pattern.

You must be joking, I’ve worked plenty of places where they were on good money but always grabbed overtime and weekends because basically they were greedy buggers…..nowt to do with topping up wages, everyone dreamed of a call-out in the middle of the night.
Overtime is not compulsory…. people have a choice.

In contracting if you didn’t work overtime you might not be invited back on the next project.
I was working nights in Newcastle, Sunday night was double time, I dropped a couple of shifts, enjoyed my Sunday afternoons too much, I was immediately transferred back onto day shift.

What’s surprising about that sctatchinghead …. You knew what the job entailed but decided despite that you wanted to do it your way….. I’m beginning to sympathise with and see your employers problem now.

never needed an excuse to work sundays and bank holidays that were all paid at basic rate. sunday was a dead day for me and wank holidays consististed either of staying at home or joining a traffic jam to some seaside resort where walking became difficult due to the crowds. always managed to get saturdays off during the football season as so many for reasons i,ll never understand is they preferred to work saturday if you took their late sunday shift off them. as for overtime i could not get enough. a break from home and enabled me to buy stuff extra as it was the only way i was going to find money to do it coming from a family where at death they,d all got sod all to leave.

Called shift working Snowy, it also creates more jobs.

Behave and stop splitting hairs….you criticise week end working….shift work obviously includes weekend working as do all retail jobs.
I criticised W.E. working because it is used in some cases to top up people’s income, favourite saying in my day was what’s the hours never mind the rate and is Sunday on (double time) ?
I was contracted to work 37.5 hours with overtime being optional, the company decided it was 6 x 12 hour night shifts with no time off allowed.

Snowy answering your question about having a union yes there is a union, obviously you have never worked in contracting. The shop steward/rep on most projects is selected by the name being pulled out of a hat if no one volunteers, no one ever does and it can change every month. No one would dare take a full time shop stewards job in contracting if you valued your future employment.

I know because I was a union rep in my 20’s… according to what you’ve just said you deserve all you get as whoever was in charge should have brought an area rep in to sort it out.
You got what you got through your own negligence and a desire to hang onto your job because it paid ok….. and actually I have seen it all before because I used to be a planning applicator, aka the bonus man.

I agree 100% what you say Snowy but employers rule by fear factor but do you not think before some one considers taking a Shop Stewards job they have to think of their future and their family. The area officials give no protection to anyone who has done job in the past and ends up getting blacked. I did the Stewards job once but all I got was a******* trying to make bullets all the time. I did struggle to get employed in the area after that and took a back seat and let them got on with it.
Snowy we are talking about contracting where there is a transient work force who move around, I probably worked on 50 different projects with many different employers. Employers had blacklists people who they wouldn’t employ, some said they had white list, people they would employ.

The trouble with contracting is it’s transient and your face has to fit because most jobs are by word of mouth and ‘recommendation’…but that’s the nature of the beast, you trade security for more money. My cousins and brothers have always done it and being a union rep can be dodgy as I found out and decided the permanent job with a pension was for me.
But as I said, it’s all about the money.

I had the opportunity to work in the same pharmaceutical company as my brothers, I turned it down as I couldn’t bear the thought of going to work in the same place for the next x amount of years.
Contracting gave me good living although it was feast and famine at times. I retired at 62 with a small private pension and hopefully investments to see me through to when ever.

But surely when you're contracting you are still virtually doing the same thing but in a different place. Laying bricks is laying bricks or whatever it is you do.
I prefer to be at home in me own bed. although I did contemplate joining the Royal Navy when I was a teenager. They couldn't guarantee I'd be gaffer of the Ark Royal so I gave up the idea.

I chose to go for boring security when I was 35 and while not paying as much I got to be with the family.
Working away is bad for family life and I valued that more than anything else…
I’m ok ..three pensions, but they had to be paid for out of my wage, so you don’t get them for nowt as some people think.

Yes same job, not bricklaying btw, I was an Electrician which has many different fields, different projects, variety is the spice of life, yes there were occasions when I did work away some times preferential other times when there was no local work.

I contributed to a PP after opting out of SERPS for a few years and topping it up a little bit, I decided after that no more as up until a few years ago you had to buy an annuity. which died with you not unless you assigned it to some one which meant the value of the annuity was less. I now pay tax on my PP as my State Pension uses up the majority of my tax allowance, pension contributions are tax deferred, whilst you get tax relief initially you pay tax in later life on your PP.

My tax is also collected from my PP but actually it is calculated on my total earnings. For reasons best known to HMRC they prefer to do it that way. All I do is add all the money from both sources, discount my personal allowance, work out what tax I should pay, and check it against what has been deducted. If there is a difference it is usually very slight and is rectified automatically by the Tax office. As long as I don't pay more than I should I really couldn't give a monkeys how they do it.

I don’t do mine, HMRC tell my PP provider what tax to deduct, I go online to check it though using the Government Gateway system to see if it’s correct, it always is.

I don't do mine either, my PP also get a tax code from HMRC. I do check it though, as I described.
