Whilst lying in my hospital bed I was pondering on the re-arrest of Gary Glitter. Obviously him and Savile are the most highlighted but they weren’t alone. One that seems to have gone under the radar is Roy Wood.

I’d like to bring to your attention a song called ‘Fire Brigade’ recorded by The Move which was in the charts in 1968. The lyrics include these lines:

“Cast your mind back ten years to the girl who’s next to me in school
If I put my hand upon her leg she’d hit me with her rule

You’d be fascinated by her, she could set the place on fire

Half past ten in the morning she just took me by surprise
I’d love you all to meet her, I’ll be there, I’ll be there

Though tomorrow won’t be long, you’re gonna have to play it cool
If you jump you’ve got to wait your turn”

This song was written by Roy Wood, who was born in 1946, so he would have been in his early twenties at the time, and if he’s casting his mind back ten years then how old was this hot girl he was sat next to, the one who he remembers attempting to fondle? Even ten years later he’s fondly reminiscing about how he succeeded in exciting her, and encouraged his friends to join in.

He may not rank alongside Gary Glitter when it comes to grooming, abuse and assault, but I think an investigation into possible historical sexual offences could be justified here.

Nonsers sctatchinghead If they were both in their early teens (if that) 10 years before it's not an offence - they were both kids at the time.

A lad at my school called Roger Pounder got a lass in his class up the duff when they were both 13. With a name like that what could you expect  The rest of us were green with envy because we hadn't got past choking the chicken. Sure the poor lass thought it was less funny than we did.

Tonight's the night I've waited for
Because you're not a baby anymore
You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen,
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

What happened to that funny face
My little tomboy now wears satins and lace
I can't believe my eyes you're just a teenage dream
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

When you were only six I was your big brother
Then when a you were ten we didn't like each other
When you were thirteen You was a funny valentine
But since you've grown up Your future is sewn up
From now on you're gonna be mine, so

That final lyric could be misconstrued and not necessarily for the better

Girl, you'll be a woman soon.

This begs the question of why are you sniffing round a girl who by your own admission isn't a woman yet so by definition is a child.

Young girl, get out of my mind
So you're considering being a nonse?

Roy Wood dated one of the most beautiful women of the early 70s. Ayesha Brough.

She had her own pop tv show (Lift Off) was also in UFO, and was absolutely gorgeous.

Roy Wood was not dodgy but plenty of others were, Tam Paton (BCR manager) Jonathan King, Rolf Harris, Chuck Berry, even John Peel plus loads more DJs.

at the time they were youngish lads themselves. there must have been loads of temptations for them unlike the average lad in the street. who is to say what anyone would have done is a similar circumstance. its too easy to say that you,d have walked away if you had never had these temptations.

‘I wonder if Roy Wood wore his make up off stage all the time….otherwise you’d never recognise him……..?’ …..someone once said to me back in the early70’s  Little sisters eh?

Roy Wood lives in a converted pub near Leek now. Interestingly, it sits on the crossroads where Gordon Banks lost an eye.
