Anyone remember the ‘demo’ against Sentinel, the Mail’s Pools correspondent, it was about 1970/1 outside the Mail office after a Saturday match as twilight came over.
We tramped down and stood outside the Mail office shouting ‘Sentinel out’ for five minutes till a copper arrived, looked unimpressed and said… ‘Howay lads, it’s starting to drizzle’…my mate said ‘ he’s got a point’ ….demo over and I never really knew what it was about anyway.

thought this was going to be about rail cars and the shit useless buses they made in the 50,s. remember when we received a batch of seddons in the 70,s and said they were a joke. one of the old timers spoke and said not as hilerious as the sentinel was we had on loan in 52.

Did a railcar run between West Hartlepool and Hartlepool stations?

Crosville bought rather a lot…… suspect they were made in someone’s garage in batches of one.

Remember seeing a photo of the station on the Headland after it closed and wooden chairs were scattered at random, but these were really decent gear, worth a fortune now. There was a similar chair in the entrance to the old Central Library…always caught my eye.

I recall as an apprentice some new kit arriving from Northrops and everyone rushed out to see it…. As I joined the rush my technician grabbed me by the shoulder and said the classic phrase” Stop here and get on with the job in hand, you’ll be sick to death of the bloody thing in six months times when it goes wrong”. He was right

well they were for the bosses with their good fuel consumption and easier maintainance. my only knowledge of driving gardner engined vehicles were 6 cylinder daimlers which were as .slow as anything you could imagine. god knows what the 5 cylinder version was liked that United had in the pre 1960 era combined with a crash box.

no different to the treakle 20/50 we put in years ago to get the oil pressure up on a nearly knackered engine with 70,000 miles on the clock once that got walm. oil must be one of the reasons they were played out and most now can cover double those mileages at double the speeds we once did.

Cars just seem to go on and on…I’ve got a 1.4 Note and it starts every morning and it just goes, never let me down and it does some miles 113k on the clock.

and with the same componants fitted to it that it left the factory with. have not had any engine or gearbox work done on a car for over 35 years and everyhing i drive has many years on there backs when i get them. the only things that seem to go regularly now are radiators which is either down to anti freeze or the tap water with so many chemicals in it.
