Not for me. Would help if you didn’t refer sarcastically to his ‘excellent cv in the dog and duck league’ ….. the old slap in the face and then pat on the the back is a poor combination.

I am certain we will be very good under this manager and I really believe a top three finish is realistic. Its early days yet but from what i have seen of pre season we look more solid in defence have a experienced midfield with bite and flair and a front line that is fast direct and full of goals. Its all about opinions but now you have mine. Have faith UTP

It would have been good if the OS had put the team line up for today, what does Chandy do for his wage ?

We are not dealing with Walsall’s pressing and resorting to long balls as a result.
Unfortunate deflection for first goal .

Second best all half. They could have had more. Tumilty being given the run around by their very good winger.

We are resorting to long balls to Umerah who seems more interested in grappling with their centre back than jumping to head it.

Hartley needs to change something second half but it might take another couple of games for the team to gel properly.

Umerah looks a handful. Otherwise hard to say if Walsall are playing well or we're poor. They've restricted us to very little. Only one half of football but so far no good.

Walsall with equal amounts of new players in their team.

We looked unsteady throughout, creaking all over at the back. Fearful when the ball was at their feet, resorting to passing back and a lump ball forward.

Can’t imagine it’ll be a very nice team talk in there.

This guy was welcomed as the man who would get the best out of players who have never played at this level. Clearly we've seen the accounts and no real money was available. Let's hope they are better next week and this is a blip because the pressure will be on at home

How many times have you watched Pools play and what assumptions do you base there is not enough quality in the team ?

I stand corrected. Walsall - with 13 odd new additions themselves - look far better equipped than we do. My opinion got rubbished as negativity. What I see is an incredibly strong league 2 division and a Hartlepool team with a number of unproven gambles in it. Will it work? We will see.

I look forward to next Saturday at The Vic. Things can only get better from here. This has been one of the worst performances I’ve seen in the last 3 seasons.

Shambles, disorganised chaos and 4th goal down to Killip still afraid to come off his goal line. Ah well, hopefully we can only get better. Being bullied all over the pitch but also ref giving us little, we should have had a free kick prior to their 3rd goal

Just shows theres a major gap between Scottish n English football thats why me n a few other posters refered to the recruitment as gambles.

Add in the non league recruiting n its a recipe for disaster.
Take 3rd bottom.
Thats not an overreaction just an honest opinion.

Take for instance - Danny Johnson - of Walsall. You’ve signed him because you know he scores goals at league 2 level.

We’ve signed a whole host of players with 0 pedigree at league 2 level - show me one... bar Cooke - who was awful today and at fault for one by the way.

I’ve said all along it’s a gamble. Whether we’re raking the chips in or not will depend on them stepping right up from the level they have shown today. Only way is up, let’s take our medicine and go again next weekend!!

My mistake, the 6-0 loss to Brentford was fifth game of the 71-72 season. We finished 18th out of 24 that year.

I thought Tumilty, Lacey, Murray all struggled.

Cooke and Taylor both had very little impact on the game, and both always seemed to be in no mans land. Niang did quite a bit of running, but also struggled to have an impact. I'm not entirely sure what positions Cooke and Taylor were playing. Taylor was like the kid trying his best to impress but never being anywhere near the ball. The matched bypassed Cooke completely.

I thought Hastie and Umerah tired hard. Featherstone did his best.

The short answer to why we played badly was because we did not play as a cohesive unit. Specifically:

1. The midfield struggled to get on the ball, and were overran. There was nothing to connect the front three (if they played as a front three) with the midfield. Overwhelmed by Walsall's pressing, after about 20 or so minutes, the team lost confidence of playing football, and resorted to long balls to Umerah, bypassing the midfield.

2. The defence did not play as a unit.

A very worrying performance, and there's a lot of work to be done.

Agree. Again - I was berated on here for saying that we’d start slow due to the need for 10+ players to gel in quick time.. SQUAD etc etc.

I’ve not seen a worse Pools performance in past 3 years end to end than that one today. In 10 games time, we may well look a lot better. But the point remains. Continuity and building something over seasons gives you a platform for success rather than a new starting XI - minus your best players from the previous campaign - every season. Good luck to PH.

I gather Walsall were in a similar position to us in terms of large scale player recruitment but maybe they recruited better players because their manager is highly experienced at this level and knows what is required.

Worst opening loss was in the mid 20s, 6-0 to Rochdale but we finished 6th. Mind you also lost 4-0 at start of 89/90 to Halifax and followed that up with 0-3, 0-3, 1-2 & 0-8 (Stockport!) defeats :o

Think most fans were concerned with what we were bringing in during the summer, from let's be honest very weak leagues. You just can't sell or get rid of your best players all the time and expect to do anything. I feel sorry for Hartley, other teams bring in football league quality.I'd take 3rd bottom now if it was offered.

Must be one of our worst first day defeats for many years. I remember losing 6-0 away at Brentford in the 70's, cant remember exactly what year. Maybe I'll have look on The Mad Crowd.

Worst opening loss was in the mid 20s, 6-0 to Rochdale but we finished 6th. Mind you also lost 4-0 at start of 89/90 to Halifax and followed that up with 0-3, 0-3, 1-2 & 0-8 (Stockport!) defeats :o

Thanks for the info, depressing though it is. Lets hope we don't follow in the footsteps the 89/90 team.

No they weren’t. You were chastised if you dare say that pre season wasn’t all that great. We were defensively solid, attacking, fast and full of goals. Today was reality, so much work left.
