Appointment as Head of Recruitment confirmed on the OS:

https://www.hartlepoolunited.co.uk/news ... cruitment/

Got to admit he does have a geekish look about him but any reasonable person would assume he's done a decent job in his last 3 years as Rotherham's chief scout. They're on the brink of promotion to the Championship, despite a bad wobble since winning the Papa John's Trophy. Still waiting to hear what Paul Warne's connection with the Boro is, otherwise why on earth would he have kept 'the geek' in a job?

So, Spike gets his man. Difficult not to read that as confirmation that the Pools hierarchy don't see Lee/Nelson as 'boneheads' just yet and are going to stick with them through to next season. Personally I've got a load of misgivings about the way this one is finishing, and precious little optimism about the one to come.

As I said on the other post on this subject, he’s described as being successful at his job at Rotherham, so why’s he leaving a club at a higher level to come here.
Someone please explain because it doesn’t add up.

It's because we are a rich and ambitious club, one that is on the up. On top of that we offered him a massive rise..........I'll get me coat.

Wish Mr. I would bring back the 'Ignore' button so I can stick you on it.

I expect part of it is the same reason a lot of players come back to the North East - he's got friends and family up here. Plus, it's a promotion - Chief Scout to Head of Recruitment.

Whoa there, one minute they’re coming back to the North East, the next, we can’t recruit players because we’re in the Arctic Circle just down the road from Murmansk.
The conundrum hasn’t been answered that I originally asked.

‘Swooped and lured him away’ sctatchinghead
Was Trotter walking down the street in Rotherham’s Latin Quarter when a snatch squad from Queen Vic’s SAS squad swooped and took him to the nearest Drive thru to buy him a ‘breakfast’…… after making various offers and promises his head was turned and a chopper called up to pick him up at a disused pickled onion factory in Doncaster?
We should be told.

surely even without a laptop you do not have had to be a ex pro to spot talent. doubt anyone on here has, but can voice opinions on players which are usually not that far off the mark. there has been plenty of succesful managers in the game who have had poor playing careers so why should a scout be any different.

..unlike us scouts get paid for what they do and their opinions...most scouts are ex professionals or semi professionals...not young geeky kids out of college with sports science degrees and a penchant for data analysis...and contacts in the game limited to who they know as mates or relatives.....we should not be employing anyone on the basis of their ability to play football manager on an x box...call me old fashioned ..but thats my opinion...it is what it is..

again its fashion over substance where many clubs are going down this computer geek line with other things like this data they get from players and this so called healthy lifestyle they have to follow via diaticians at clubs. has all this made the game better to acctually watch. does this give a player heart and unwillingness to never say die. i,d say its a massive NO. just hope another fashion comes in called back to basics before i go to the big stadium in the sky.

In many respects, the game has dutifully mimicked society and gentrified itself, giving itself airs and graces and embracing the ‘new’ with gusto.
The new layers added to the game of this post and that post are just financial burdens that I doubt any club has sat down and analysed sensibly, because they were the driving force behind degrees in sports and coaching so having created them you have to find a job for them.
Is the game any better?… can’t say I’ve noticed, a lot neater and presentable to the media and really that’s what it’s all about, presentation and image.

I have watched a few Brian Clough videos on YouTube including with former players, the Mark Crossely one is particularly good, Undr the Cosh. Clough selected the team told the players to play 4-2-4;he didn’t surround himself with the various staff clubs now employ. He was a one of unfortunately alcohol took its toll which surprises me as he appeared on the surface a very person.

...i have a feeling he did not take much "luring" when his bonehead mate came calling..and similarly no need to have "swooped" really...somehow doubt there was queuing outside the new york stadium with club reps wanting his signature on employment contracts....

we are becoming victims of the modern game - only we dont have modern money to go with it all ! We have recruited a data mining non ex pro with no serious experience playing at any level - cant seem to see how a scout / recruitment guy can do this job without having previously played the sport at at professional level - ive got a fair few hours put in on flight simulator, last thing id be doing is asking Emirates for a go of the A380. Some baffling decisions are being made by the club just now.
lets just hope this guy has 'contacts' in the game and not just by his bed side in a jar. Loose Saturday and yes ill be hitting that little panic button i have in my head that tells me not to spend money on another season ticket.

yep... can see it now ... Few of the usual expected incomings from Boro on say short term deals - Including a keeper from them. (who we probs wont use all season).

then maybe the odd one from Rotherham... wont get excited thinking we may get one or two of their released players. like snowy said.. they will no doubt be a who?...

but we are definetly due a WOW but in all the wrong ways... bit like the Solano signing

One WOW is in the goalkeeping area, Killip is going in for a re-vamp to a small ship repairers called Billy Bangiron Ltd on the Isle of Wight. They intend to remove his man bun as it’s been discovered the massive weight perched precariously on the top of his head affects his balance and centre of gravity, causing him to capsize at unexpected moments on the pitch, resulting in erratic performances.
The new improved Killip+ will be floated out after a week of burning and grinding and posted back.

Time will tell.

You can also add What and Why to that.
Useful as an aide memoir.

No logistic analysis, Degree in mince pies needed, other pies available, to bump up to, with honours, gravey and chips.
Other useless jobs and shite degrees available.

"FINDING football talent has changed radically in recent years with the appliance of science.
Number-crunching, video analysis and vast searchable data bases are every bit as important as the wily old scout with a notebook in the stand.
But the basic aim of the job remains the same says Gary Gill, Boro’s Head of Recruitment.
“We just try to give the manager the tools to do his job,” said Gill. “We work hard to make sure he can put the best possible team on the pitch and help find players who can get Boro back into the Premier League.”
Most Boro fans will have a wish list of targets but it is not as simple as it sounds getting them in. “Its not easy to sign a good footballer,” said the former Boro midfielder."

...so gary....didnt you play for darlo by the way..when you had long hair in a ponytail..yep?.. i remember you ..just checking..so the thing is...we have now got one of your ex data analysis lads in charge of our recruitment strategy at the pools....trotter..wears glasses...seems a nice lad..remember him?... but the thing is..and i know you dont give a shit being ex darlo ..like..but how does all this data analysis stuff work?...i mean borer are still in the championship despite what you say in the article above..and all these geeks doing u tube analysis of players cannot come cheap?..thing is i know with you having gibson costs dont matter..but us at pools we are worried we have just recruited someone who knows sweet f.a about football..even though he has a sports science degree and knows how to get video clips of players on u tube..is there anyway you could get in touch with our manager and just check out that this trotter lad is what we need at our level...just worried that we might be wasting money which we could have spent elsewhere..like on some decent players for example..thanks in anticipation...

To be fair, the Degree in Mince pies, chips, peas and gravy has it’s merits….. although with a Uni organising it, it would be ‘Pie , peas, chips and gravy, but not as we know it.
Yeah, you’ve got a point, fuck em

It’s like someone designing say …… a ship. The office bound geek analysing the data to find the best possible design and eventually signs off the job as a good job well done, pat on back from boss. At no time has he ever visited the ship, or even been on a ship he works on raw data and hopes it comes together.

just hope tippy tappy trotter will be told that pools do not require any players under 6ft tall with new central defenders a few inches taller. no team have reallly played pools off the park with their football ability, but have certainly bullied em and run amock in midfield. far better at the so called ugly side of the game thats so important in league 2.

The ugly side is definitely needed in midfield, no doubt about, I expect it in defence and a few flyer and smarter players up front. Am I asking too much? sctatchinghead
