With this cold weather I wondered what people are paying for their Gas/Electricity and who has the better deal.

Mine below are based on fixed deals (12 months) and are inclusive of VAT and are separate energy companies for each fuel.

GAS

2.3732p per kwh with 17.85p per day charge

ELECTRICITY

Day: 0.16284p per unit
Night (Economy 7): 0.10965p per unit
Standing (Daily) charge: 0.10110p

There must be better deals out there?

I find Octupus Energy okay. What about Dual Fuel? usually cheaper. All depends on your personal circumstances as to what is best for you, no one else can really tell you which is best, unless their circumstances are exactly the same.

When you use a price comparison site make sure you tick the box 'show all deals' or they only show you deals they can take you to and earn commission. If you tick the box you get some more competitive deals from some of the smaller newer companies. Prices are going up sharply at the moment so you may not save much if your 12 month deal is coming to an end but shopping around will find comparable prices.

not sure you can do it for gas and electric prices but i have ditched these price comparison sites for just ringing up companies for car insurance. saved over 100 pounds on the lowest quote on there with 1 phone call.

And use more than one comparison site, as they get paid a commission. The Martin Lewis site provides a good service & they give you back £25 from what they are paid

There seems to have been a change over the last few years where the price charged per unit has been reduced, but standing charges have risen. So you can use less fuel, but still end up paying more.

If you have been working from home or on furlough, this winter's bill will be much higher than in previous years. I envisage this creating a lot of difficult-to-pay high bills, for some consumers

Two last things - use actual meter readings & unit usage, instead of relying on any averages the providers suggest, & check your bills against what you have actually used

I often think these comparison sites could be manipulated by the big energy companies, algorithims and all that, that's why I tend to use Martin Lewis now.

They say energy bills are going to rise 100 quid in the next year. Notice my electric bill was 33& higher this month. I reckon its the slow cooker I got for Christmas that I have been using a lot, and due to the lockdown and the weather a mixture of watching more tv and using the computer more.
