Anyone still playing this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subbuteo

Perhaps if games are called off the two captains (socially distanced of course) could have a game to decide the result and avoid fixture congestion?

Not playing it but have about 20 teams, pitch, stands etc etc up in our loft waiting for them to become collectors items.

As a young lad I used to repaint one team as the current HUFC strip each year (not sure which team they started as) as I didnt have a life / anything better to do!

I'd buy one if with modern technology the players could run and kick using a remote console, without the aid of a flick up the ars!!

I will let you into a Horden secret here. I used to put sugar on the pitch to make it more realistic for games played in the winter months, for those under 40, these were games played between the months of December and February.

I used to blow on the ball just before my opponent took a shot for a realistic 'gusty wind' effect.

we actually had a subbuteo league of about 8 lads at school. we played at each others houses in home and away games. i had the roughest pitch to stop the others playing and was quite successful in home games only. it wasn,t realistic however as pools were crap in the early 60,s both home and away. however to make it worse i didn,t have to seek re election either at the end of the season.

I crushed many a player with my knee when leaning over the pitch. Got to have some injuries.

Same here Accrington, but I can only recall about 6 of us - so I don't think it was in your league as I don't recall any doctored pitches. One of the 6 was Jeff Stelling, who played as Burnley !!

Is that membership of the Subbuteo elite ?

Remember the players made of cardboard on a plastic base ? Cue comments about similarities with some of today's footballers

beeney might have been a decent keeper if he had a big wire attached to his feet at the town end to make him move.

Subbuteo was the game to play. I wasn't Posh so made my "Stadium" with Stands made out of Wood, Lego and Cardboard. Probably wouldn't be allowed by the H&S Gestapo these days. PS The Astro Pitch was Sh*te! You had to unroll it and flatten it for 24 hours before it was Flat.

FTR Subbuteo is the Latin name of the Bird called The Hobby, hence the pic of the Bird on the Boxes. The Hobby was the original name of the game but couldn't be licensed, hence the name change.

Point D) Bishop Auckland were no 58 on the shop Posters.

I didnt have the stand but a couple of sections of terracing , but they were crap compared to the two homemade stands my dad made me, one seated, one with terraces. Bless him, he must've spent hours up in the loft making them, they were brilliant, with Hartlepool FC painted on the front of the seated stand.

The pitch was pinned down on some thin boarding, thus avoiding problems of creasing, but had a tendency to warp at the corners, good players with quick fingers could use this to there advantage  .

Remember the other game was Big League, which was shite compared to Subbuteo.

What was the one called where you pushed the players head down to kick the ball, my first subbuteo team was Burton Albion, they were cheap from sportskit in York Road, this was early seventies so well non-league then.

Great shop Sportskit used to get my Football boots there. Liked Adidas football boots best where as Puma boots made me slice my shots which ruined my dream of playing professional football. Does anyone think i could launch a successful claim against Puma for lost earnings? bbolt

I like to explain to people where shops are by using the old owners/names like Jack Marshalls, Yorkshire Lassie cafe, Fred Lumsdens, Lambert, Powers,Gales Motors etc etc always gets a good laugh.

It was Gentrys Ron, it sold really fashionable stuff at the time. I used to get my tank tops and stay press trousers from there to go with my dm's.
