Bit boring how ever i have just recieved my 1st bill since they took over supply from hartlepool water and as they stated new tarifs and charges and my bill has gone up 65%.
How do these companys get away with this level of increase.

I got one too which i thought was the most confusing bill i have ever received.
Dont know how you work out a 65% rise. Are you on a meter and have/has a leak. This happened to me once.
I pay £14 a month on a meter.

If you've got a balance anglian water will try and get that balance cleared off before your next bill, hartlepool water would be a little bit kinder and allow you a wee bit longer.

I rang them up as mine had gone up a bit, they let me bring it down.

Come to think of it, I was a month in arrears , so that probably explains why I thought it had went up. I went online and paid for the year in advance , as the water companies are absolute bastards when it comes to haranguing people , miss two payments and they are threatening you with court , so I just pay in full , to get them off my back . When I paid monthly or quarterly whatever , sometimes I didn't have enough in my account , and they were straight on my case.

Water prices supposed to be generally falling this year. I am sure you can move switch these days like you can with Gas and Electricity.

According to Water UK, which represents and works with most major suppliers, the new rates for 2020-2021 will see the average bill across England and Wales drop from £413.33 to £396.60.

Anglian: Average bills this year falling 6% to £412
Northumbrian: Average bills this year falling 21% to £326
South West: Average bills this year falling 3% to £470
Southern: Average bills this year falling 2% to £391
Thames: Average bills this year falling 0.5% to £394
United Utilities: Average bills this year falling 5% to £420
Wessex: Average bills this year falling 8% to £447
Yorkshire: Average bills this year rising 4% to £406[/i]

I’m currently paying 21 pound p/m as a single occupant in a 1 bedroom flat. Should I be looking at getting put on a meter to get this down or is that the going rate?

Get a meter micky you are paying on rateable value rather than what you use.

Sounds like it could be the right idea moving forward. I trimmed a fiver a month of my broadband recently just for making a phone call and threatening to switch supplier. Every little helps during the current climate

Well an installed meter is free micky and you will pay around £13 p/m so nothing to lose.
I just know why mine has increased.

Always been sceptical of meters , but I reckon given your circumstances , you would probably save by having a meter.

Have you not had the meter read for some considerable time and they are catching up?

Or you could have a leak. If you ring them they will advise. In my case they came out and identified that my toilets ball valve was stuck and the overflow was one of those that went into the toilet bowl not to an outside overflow pipe. They were very helpful.

I became more conscious of water usage when my was installed.
I now only flush the toilet when its lapping around the lip.

That's why I don't like them. I always thought though that they would benefit someone living on their own. Maybe have a look at switching providers then

If you have any issues with water its best to contact them and ask for advice. As i said i found them helpful and regulated by Ofwat.
Yes i know they are greedy and make huge profits but on an individual basis they are ok.

Try

I stand corrected. I know the law changed in 2017 but it appears it applies to small businesses being able to change not domestic users. Prior to 2017 it was only big businesses who used a lot of water who could switch.

Think it would be chaos if you could change water suppliers like. Prices much for muchness regardless, as you say monopolies, and monopolies generally hang up together. Obviously a nationalised industry is what I would prefer.

Nationalisation of water would not be towards the top of the list for me as the cost is not significant to the consumer (only £14/month for me anyway). It would be Energy,Railway and Buses for me first giving security of energy supply delivered in an environmental way with an integrated national transport policy.
The rest can be controlled by very strict regulation and contracts/SLAs.

When meters first came out, everyone who got one raved about how much money they saved. But....they were a minority. When everyone has one it’ll be a different kettle of fish.
They won’t be so cheap then.
