So the Queen is to urge 'self discipline and resolve' in her speech today.
Easy said when you have a choice of castles to self isolate in and a choice of acreage to walk, fish, hike and swim in without seeing another person.
The last thing many of us need right now is being lectured at by multi billionaires, many of whom could have used that wealth for the greater good of others.

Unfortunately the others would have just used the additional cash to feed their habits!

Well that changes everything. A momentous occasion.

Honest it does.

Blitz spirit, innit, fight the virus with a stiff upper lip and cheek and that

I have one question for her

How will your Andrew know if he has the virus if he never sweats?

I’m struggling to disagree. Seems very patronising of someone with thousands of acres of garden to lecture people in an overcrowded flat.

She’s 93 I doubt she’s getting her fishing rods out before going for a swim.

Here’s me thinking it was an important and well delivered message from our head of state.

What she is urging is crucial to preserve human life and plenty of idiots still haven’t got the message if some of the pictures from the weekend are anything to go by.

I wouldn’t say this situation is easy for anyone it is effecting everyone and certainly isn’t discriminating on anyone. Her own son for example.

I agree with this but I'm not surprised you have posted it. Your bigoted anti Boris world is collapsing around you and , as is usual amongst bigots, you have to moderate a little.
I think you should do the honourable thing and simply crawl into a vacant corner, which on here might be a bit crowded.
Get well soon, Boris, so you can continue the fight to keep us safe.

To be fair , I actually felt sorry for her, she reminds me of my mam before she died, with her white hair and simplistic clothing. I don't believe she is a bad person, in reality I bet she is probably quite nice, how could she be anything else having lived all her life in a bubble. Its not personal, its just I don't believe in the monarchy and what it stands for , and obviously she is at the head of it.

Her message was sincere, and she meant well, she probably genuinely thought she was doing her bit, and most people I imagine would see it that way , so in that respect , fair play. Its worrying though that she was wheeled out to do this speech a week before Easter, which suggests to me, the government are really concerned about people not heeding the lockdown advice as the weather improves. Its been so far what you would call, A Very British Lockdown ( a right clusterfook )

I bet everyone contributing to this post were all sat attentively soaking up every word like Princess Di groupies and have been up all night playing it back while ironing your royal tea towel collection. bbolt

Never watched it. Never watched a Xmas speech either, but if some people want to watch it, who am I to criticise.

Believe it or not it was broadcast live on French TV with an instantaneous translation (of the script that had been released two days beforehand).
Madame Poolier watched it. I was busy doing some very creative drinking and music listening.

I'm usually fast asleep when the Xmas speech comes on.

If you'll allow me to paraphrase, "get me out of this house with the lousy celebrity food and into a singing and magic show island nightmare".

I am about the furthest away you can get from being a fan of the Royals, however...

I am glad the Queen did this, purely and simply as it might get the message to some of the older people who lived through the war(s). The ones who refuse to be told what to do. The ones going on radio stations saying that they've lived their lives and will carry on as normal. These are the people who are likely to listen to the Queen

Surely this is more of a help than a hindrance?

It’s not ‘The Bunker’ it’s a selected few people. I love the Queen myself. She is everything a head of state should be.

Plus on picking them is better than killing them, which our government didn’t seem too bothered about until March 12th.

Not old ladies, just one whom nobody forced to continue into her nineties; though on second thoughts maybe she received some understandable pressure not the fuck to let Charles take over.

You think the Queen should be elected?

Who else would be in the running?

She doesn’t actually run the country does she really she performs ceremonial duties.

For what reason out of interest?

I often read about them costing us money but I read before that they bring in about £500 million a year more than they cost.

If it’s because of Prince Andrew then I don’t have a solid comeback.

With all due respect that’s nonsense remove the word monarchy and the same can be said of any child born into A list celebrity or huge wealth.

I’d say it’s more unfair that people can be born into abject poverty which is far more common in just about every country in the World.

It’s just life, nobody chooses where they are born and what they are born into.

I'm not against a modern monarchy (ours isn't) and one that doesn't have it's political mouth sealed by parliament (ours does).
But I just happen to believe that her madge is a nasty piece of work with a carrot stuck up here arse, just like her mam.
Royal weddings and birthdays and jubilees and all that shit are a poor substitute for a proper national day.

And don't get me started on "God Save the Queen". With all the musical and literary talent we have is that the best we can do?

I certainly think people should have a vote on whether they want a monarchy. I think the monarchy would get the nod from the people, though the result may send shock waves through the establishment, which is probably the reason why they wont have a vote. After the result , which would be binding for at least 50 years, we could either have a civil war or we could put the issue to bed and move on. I do think the people should have a say though, people are always telling me things have changed , times have changed, well in this case they certainly have , a lot of people don't give a two hoots about the monarchy these days, its something from the dark ages.

if the national anthem of our country was voted for worldwide on music and lyrics alone then it could make null points on a good day. at least if they wanted to keep the tune surely better words could be used in it for all the land and people. like a durge football song about one player and not the team.

sorry horden but i think you are way off the mark with an outcome of a vote. being a lifelong republican i can agree with all your points except the outcome of a vote. if the whole population over 18 did vote i think we,d be lucky to see a 25 per cent vote for abolition. the thing is its not the age of people that would vote one way or another but its an issue where men and women differ. lots of women cannot get enough of the royals and royal news and further north you seem to go their populatity sees to wain. imagine the aldershot messageboard would be less a republican stronghold as the bunker and other northern clubs.

Well if you feel that confident , lets have a vote then, and put it to bed and stop all the bickering and bad feeling towards them. I did say I think you would win , though think it would be closer than you suggest. Costly way of proving a point I know, but a point that needs to be proved , a bit like the Referendum on the EU , oh hold on that never went to plan did it

if i was the only republican in the village my views on the monarchy would not change no matter what the percentage of a vote would be. like brexit people will not change their mind on it never mind its outcome. however the good side of the royalty debate is that there are less than there was 60 years ago that did support em. more and more times they shoot themselves in their feet the better as its more joining my side. give it another 25 years but may be then too late for me to revel in the result.

The thing with electing a President is that usually half the country approves of them and the other half doesn’t.
The Queens power in reality is ceremonial, Disneyesque even and the money they generate in tourism cancels out their cost....... and they know it.
We could have President Blair instead I suppose or President May.... but be careful what you wish for. Don't forget, Hitler was elected,...and that one didn’t quite work out.

But the ones who did live through WW2 did do as they were told, carried their ID, gas masks, rationing cards, obeyed the blackout etc etc

Which is exactly my point. If they are told to do something by someone who they respect, it may make a difference. Someone who has seen it all as well.

just like we would all do if it happened today. the thing is WW2 is getting like a history lesson as i imagine anyone under 85 has very little or no memories of it. her indoors was born in 1940, lived in london and cannot remember a thing about the war.

Ancestry is not the fault of any of us. The Queen is British. We all have ancestors from all kinds of areas of the world. So what.
Be careful or some silly bugger on here will start accusing you of being racist, which I say you're not.

You're wrong. He did not seize power, he was elected as Chancellor in 1933. When President Hindenburg died in 1934 he assumed the role. The term ‘Fuhrer’ simply means leader.
