I’m under 40 (just) and I’d vote 42.

Sunday nights were the best everyone out but it closed at half ten!

The Wesley was good because I used to get in for 70’s night when I was 16, 70p in 70p for any drink. I didn’t turn up for many Friday mornings at sixth form college during that period!

Sorry how could I forget 42 the only night club I have been in that had a turnstile. Getting the coupons for the Wesley out of the mail. I also forgot about Chicago rock on a Thursday all you could drink. I shudder to think how much sugar I consumed necking bottles VK tropical and reef

The Carton had a different name at one time didn't it? I do remember seeing the Ivy League there.
That was the group that sang What's That Funny Smell?

The cotton club above Shades was an eye opener. Remember going to the bogs for a slash and there was just me and three women with one in the cubicle with no door having a piss that sounded like a horse emptying it bladder.

Hartlepool history then and now has the answer. The original name of the club in Surtees Street was the Collingwood. I'd never have remembered that in a million years but I do now. It was also the first club in Hartlepool to have a very special ladies' night

http://www.hhtandn.org/venues/5254/nightclubs

What perturbs me seeing those dates is that I wasn't even 18.

I've spent the last hour looking through those pictures Monty. Before my time but I can't believe that I forgot to include the Rink. If you were born in Hartlepool anytime between WW1 and 1968 then Rink was probably involved in your parents meeting. The same can be said of the 70's/80's for the Gemini.

As an aside, I can't believe that incredible buildings were knocked down. A prime example being the art deco ABC. Surely they could find something to use it for rather than building glass an steel palaces.

Didn't realise the Rink was so big, have previously seen pictures of the entrance, but this action shot of Pools shows the depth of the place

To be fair Mr I I'm not even sure the term "night club" existed when the Rink was in its prime.
I think the Rink was the first place I was ever, ahem, "aroused" in the presence of a girl and believe me it took some hiding.

What was the name of the one that was under Buzz and Zoom (later Riley's snooker hall)? Uropa? Maybe one for PJ and Compo as I'm in the same age bracket as them. In what can only be described as a quirky move they had a pot noodle machine in the corner. Just what you wanted after a skin-full!

I remember Pow being OK. But then again when you're 17 anywhere that will serve you without any fuss got a good write up the following morning!

As the name implies it was a Ballroom, or dance hall to the masses, a place where I imagine people went to dance, before peoples moral standards to started to fall. Think nightclubs as we knew them came into being in the 1960s aka Discotheques

The Carlton was called the Lindisfarne before that and i think the Manhattan even earlier. Remember the Gemini well and the Riv (if you couldn't get in anywhere else) There was also another nightclub along from the Gatsby at Seaton called I think The Blue Lagoon (in the 1970s) can vaguely remember going - was like grab a granny night everynight if i remember rightly!

One of the Seaton ones was the old Kingfisher Cafe where I used to go with the big boys & girls after the baths. It had a juke box that took threepenny bits back then.

Pow had the best music, the late 90's early 00's trance revolution was something else.

What others were there?

You’ve excluded the world famous Manhattan, well world famous, or should that be notorious in Hartlepool.
Seen several Pools players of the day tumbling down the many many stairs a lot worse for wear after surveying the topless barmaids on a Friday night.
Must admit used to go the the Fiesta at Stockton.

Old bastards.

My first night out was in 2004, was only 15. Managed to get served in Cornerhouse but not Loons. Bouncer asked for ID, I said sorry I don't have any and just walked straight past him. He soon caught up with me and literally threw me out.

Best places for me when I was 17/18 though was Shades on a Thursday and Jax Friday/Saturday. Town used to be rammed every night from Thurs-Sun

Collingwood, Manhattan, Foxy's, Carlton ... same place. Are there any names it didn't have?
I went to the Fiesta just once, invited by my sister and brother in law. It might have been an 18th birthday treat now I think about it.
Top of the bill was Lonnie Donegan, and the supporting act was obviously the Dagenham Girl Pipers, no kidding.

True, middle of the road but, you didn’t go for the ‘acts’. That said, there was a charity do on there and Ton6 Christie was on stage lowering his hand into the panting front tables for the ladies to stroke and preening himself. Until..... near the end of his table tour one particular party had a rather large character seated that made Big foot look like a big girls blouse. Tony offered his hand and was dragged savagely at speed off the stage, though the table and ended up in a heap on the floor..... he tried to get up again but gave up.
Hilarious.

Hey Horden, the great pictures you submitted in this post: The long gone and fondly missed Rink ballroom and the smaller pic above where you can see the late, great Tony Parry RIP. Thank you for that memory and not forgetting that garage between the Rink and the Vic. We all tend to take it all for granted and then one day its gone and just a memory, fond or otherwise. Thank you for reminding us of a bit of Hartlepool that was.
