Just had a look at the preview for the Billingham game and among the players who won't feature it says "Carl Magnay is back in training after injury but won’t be involved."

Isn't he out of contract? Can understand him continuing to train at the club if he's not yet fully fit, but why would he even be considered for a Pools friendly?

An explanation would be nice.

It’s a strange one if nothing was agreed contract wise (it hasn’t been announced) then he was unemployed as of July 1st, the most likely explanation is we are letting him train with us for now but the mention does confuse the issue slightly.

God knows, surprised we still have Kennedy on trial too, thought signing that ex Salford midfielder whose name escapes me would mean were fine in midfield now.

Shame about Williams but obviously understandable, am sure the physios know best.

loads up and down the country do what he,s doing just to keep fit in the hope someone comes in for them. they continue to do it once the season gets going and some actually manage to get a short term contract with their old clubs due to it.

I noticed Magnay was at Billingham tonight. Higgy also mentions him in this interview!

It certainly sounds like he'll feature in a pre-season game as soon as he's fit. I don't get it myself. What's he going to be, fourth, fifth or sixth choice centre back?

Simple. If he gets a short term contract, it’s the bills paid.

Think he is a decent player but things have moved on at Pools.
Hope he gets a good move as i think he has something to offer.

Higgy provides an update.... of sorts.

No no no no - Magnay represents the past - although he has served the club he is well his past his sell by date and is now a liability although admittedly not quite on a par with the still unproven Luke Williams. Not even on a reduced deal I’m afraid - it sounds like even Spennymoor won’t touch him so that speaks volumes for his fitness. Why is Higgy even contemplating this? Personally I would rather see Kennedy given a one year deal.

He’s played most of his time at Pools in either full back position so what Hignett might be thinking is someone who can play anywhere in the back four is useful, the obvious opportunity for him as things stand is at left back. He’d have gone for me but I’m happy to let Hignett get on with things in terms of building the squad.

ideal squad player for me. its the ones that can only play in one position that gives you a problem when they cannot get a start.

His versatility could certainly be an asset but sadly he has missed so much football in the last 4 years through either injury or suspension it doesn't seem worth keeping him especially when we have cover in every position across the back already.

It's a shame because I like Magnay and he's certainly not been one of the worst signings made in the last 4 - 5 years but unless his wage would be so low it's almost a steal to keep him around it seems a bit of a waste to keep him on. I mean even if we where to play 3 centre backs we'd have Kerr, Raynes, Cunningham, Anderson and have also used Kioso and Richardson in a back 3 before.
