RIP.

Not many players over the years have ever been regarded as the Worlds best player in the position they play in, he was by some distance. He always came across as a humble and very decent man as well.

You realise how old you are when you remember these people as young men. I can still recall watching the '70 World Cup game against Brazil as a 16 year old. The England team of 1970 was, IMHO, the best ever, just a world class striker away from probably winning it. That 'save' was one of many great saves by Gordon Banks, there was a stunning one a few years earlier from Dennis Law at Wembley - the day Scotland declared themselves World Champions! RIP Gordon, thanks for the memories.

Brilliant player even after his serious injury would have beaten most players. A great servant yo both Leciester and Stoke as well as being a humble man a true gentleman of the game. RIP Gordon.

81 is a decent innings but RIP to a great keeper who was always worth listening to on the radio.

If there's a sweep on which of the 1966 side will be alive longest, my money is on Martin Peters - he'll ghost in at the death like he always did.

A truly great goalkeeper who read the game so well and made it look easy when not making great saves. No gamesmanship, just got on with it and wore a green jersey like a goalkeeper should. RIP Gordon and thanks for the memories.

Great keeper, person, sort of defines more than just football , defines a glorious age , the 60s and 70s , a time when things appeared to be on the up for many. Gordon Banks and England winning the World Cup somewhat defined that period.

Remember the 66 final on the telly. The old feller turned up bearing gifts at dinner time. My mother was ordered out of the house along with my little sister who had to go to her mothers in turn
My younger brother and me were given an Airfix kit (Phantom, out of my price range) sweets, crisps and lemonade and told to be silent while the match was on. He caught me watching and gave me a half time dressing down for not building my model. I kept on watching. I got the graphing rights at school for the model.

We were forced to watch the 66 Final at a neighbours house (monochrome 18” TV of course) as we were temporarily living at my nans house which was predominantly females who had no interest in footy. I was 10 at the time and remember that we danced in the street after England won - Nobby Stiles fashion. My late, great grandad said ‘make the most of it son as they won’t win the World Cup again in your lifetime’ -and so far he has been proved to be exactly right.

When you see good or even great keepers from 60’s and 70’s like Banks they never seemed to ’save’ as many with their legs or flailing arms. Maybe they did and I never noticed.

Yeah, it seemed to be their focus to get the ball firmly and keep the ball.

Joe Corrigan was on the radio yesterday describing a recent conversation he'd had with Gordon about the difference between keeping in their day and modern keepers. The gist of it was that the goalkeeper's mission has changed. In their day the job was to prevent the opposition from scoring, pure and simple. There was zero emphasis on playing it out from the back - for one thing the pitches were too muddy! Today's keepers, especially at the top level, are expected to have a high level of ball playing skill as well as stopping shots. A divided focus and less time spent perfecting the basics = inferior keepers.
