I thought I had DVT myself a couple of weeks ago and the doctor sent me off to A&E for a scan. It turned out it was just my old ankle injury flaring up and causing the swelling but it was very worrying when I thought I had it. It would have been welcome to the horrible world of Warfarin.

As someone who dealt with DVT in my right leg back in 2013 aged only 26, I wish him a very speedy recovery. My original diagnosis was nowhere near as bad as Carson's - I was originally told it was a torn calf muscle so flew to my pre-booked holiday in New York two days later(!) It was only when I came back and my leg had ballooned even more that I was finally diagnosed properly. 6 months of Warfarin sorted it, but my lower right leg is still much bigger than my left. I also live with the knowledge that another DVT means a lifetime of Warfarin, not something I would look forward to.

It's horrible stuff as are the side effects.

Warfarin side effects that require immediate medical attention

Severe bleeding, including heavier than normal menstrual bleeding
Red or brown urine
Black or bloody stool
Severe headache or stomach pain
Joint pain, discomfort or swelling, especially after an injury
Vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
Coughing up blood
Bruising that develops without an injury you remember
Dizziness or weakness
Vision changes
Rarely, warfarin can cause the death of skin tissue (necrosis). This complication occurs most often three to eight days after you start taking warfarin. If you notice any sores, changes in skin color or temperature, or severe pain on your skin, seek immediate medical care.

Less-serious warfarin side effects to tell your doctor about

Bleeding from the gums after you brush your teeth
Bleeding between menstrual periods
Diarrhea, vomiting or inability to eat for more than 24 hours
Fever
