Aye, one of the great memory men. What did it say on news this morning, he had 200 offshore bank accounts and £300,000 cash stuffed under his mattress. Did well to remember where it all was. He got off Scott free didn’t he? Great British institution my arse.

I saw him in Blackpool (where else) when I was a kid. Maybe a thousand people in the audience, all having a great time. I probably missed a lot of the seaside postcard style innuendo that was his stock in trade, but still thought he was very funny.

As the saying goes, the past is a foreign country. Back then, working class audiences identified with people who joked about cheating/beating the system, whether it was Doddy or Bobby Thompson. Moral outrage has never been funny.

Saw him a few times, absolute legend, how a man can do standup at 89 for 5 hours plus beggars belief, most people that age can barely remember their name.....Born and died in same house, clearly never forgot his roots.!!!
