Do people really believe that Mediums can?

My wife was working behind the bar at the rugby club last night when that Crawford guy was on, 150 people paying a tenner each to watch some guy guessing!!

He asked if there was anybody who knew a Tyler, silence :shhh: , then he went from that to Thai food ffs, where is the link :liar:, not a bad wage for a fraud I guess!

It's a bit paradoxical. My logical mind tells me the whole God thing is just a ridiculous fairy story continued on from the uneducated a couple of thousand years ago when people worshiped trees and fish.

But, perhaps the most intelligent man I ever knew, a Rabbi, is unshakable in his beliefs. He said to me once 'what gives you the monopoly on wisdom'? What will we know for sure in another ten thousand years? If you filled your pockets with modern day day items such as an iPhone, a cigarette lighter, a gun, a case full of medicines and traveled back a few thousand years, people would see you as a God. Perhaps in 10'000 years God will be obvious to everyone and it probably won't be as you imagine him (or her).

Perhaps we're just not evolved enough to understand yet.

One of our close friends is a medium so I'm fairly open minded about it all, he's an honest and good person who I know wouldn't take advantage of vulnerable people but maybe some do.

At the end of the day if it provides comfort for those seeking it then what is the harm? If it's not for you then it's not for you.

Fair point PJ but on the whole it's hard to argue that religion (all of them) overall has been a force for good throughout history.

Speaking of which, saw a trailer for the remake of Flatliners before the screening of the excellent Wind River the other night.

Looks as big a pile of badly acted nonsense as the original, just with updated CGI.

without any religeon it would have been difficult to fight the numerous wars over the centuries where people were told, god is on your side. people get upset about muslim extreamist groups which to me are no better than the christian extreamist ones of the middle ages. the world would be a much safer place without any religeon for me.

Damn, Jonathon's post has gone just when my dead Gran got intouch to tell me that I should pay for an online clap test. I'm assuming it was her but she did it through the talking dog so I can't be sure.

What are the chances of attracting business by registering on football sites so you can pose as a medium that sells STD testing kits on the side? And if that isn't his general approach what attracted him to Pools fans in particular? Have we got a reputation for gullibility and unprotected sex?

If there was never any religion there would never have been muslim extremists.

And its too daft for words that folk believe the world was started by a god.

Fucking hell, REALLY?

I was brought up a catholic went to catholic schools but as I've became older the less interest I have in religion and more I realise that it's nonsense. Thousands of lives have been lost due to nutcases believing books, it's absolutely mental when you think about it.

If god can do anything and make anything then why can he not make a weight so heavy that he cannot lift it? The answers to this and other God queries when you die. It seems every civilisation has needed to believe in a higher being to explain our existence. Other species just seem to crack on with it.

Very convenient that.

People believe in Gods because it's an explanation of the world that doesn't challenge their intellect.
A bit like Brexit is Getting Our Country Back, I guess.

Mediums? Bollox !
I wouldn't give them the time of day.
Clinton Baptiste just about summed it up.
Let's be honest, every mug who turns up gets a word of comfort of some sort and they depart happy, deluded, but happy.
The word 'gullible' sums it up.

If you delete all of science and start again everything will be rediscovered in the same way.

If you delete religion it won't.

That's all I need to know.

Religion was invented to keep us all in our place. If you lived in a time when life was hard and life expectancy short what did you have to lose by taking what you wanted?
Big problem for those who had.
Simple, invent a supreme being, control the message and promise them an eternity of deep joy when they finally work themselves to death.
If they don't comply?
Hell and damnation, agony for eternity.
And if the still won't comply, off with their heads.
Know your place. Still surprises me most folk never questions it

The Ghost Hunters program was being filmed in my office building in North Shields last week. It's the old court and prison and is meant to be haunted. I don't believe it at all but our typist loves to tell the story of how her cup of tea once fell off her desk. It was definitely a ghost she says.

I reckon my cat can see ghosts. Often seems to freak out in front room and won't take its eyes off whatever it is even when we pick her up.

There is a derelict mental asylum at a place called gartcosh near Glasgow that if anywhere is haunted then this place will be.

The creepiest place I have ever seen.

I have a very good friend who sees dead people, or spirits as she calls them.

I've spent a lot of time at her house over the past year and I completely believe her - in fact I've been in her house when someone new has walked in and been spooked by seeing the same person in the same place. We've had numerous conversations about things like this, alongside other people too, and I've witnessed a few things, though I don't see anything myself, which leads me to believe she is telling the truth one hundred percent. She's very quiet about this and only tells people she trusts.

Of course some mediums will be total cranks and bullshitters - after all, they have to perform or people want their money back. Perhaps some can see things and get in touch with others who've passed on, but simply have to make stuff up because they're put on the spot to come up with something.

As for religion, well that's a completely different argument, whether it be god or control of the masses - I'm not one for organised religion myself. As for seeing spirits, some people do, or feel them - yes

I would love to know for certain what is out there. Loads of things which can only be explained by a long stretch of logic and possibility.

I work with a bloke who bought a house which was owned by a gadgie who hung himself to death from the back garden tree. When he moved in the dog wouldn't go in the garden. Until the tree was cut down.

What freaked me out most was when my eldest, aged 2, started saying 'Grandad Walter's gone now, he's gone now' 2 days before he died of a stroke out of the blue. He'd never talked about him prior to that, at the time he was saying it I was ready to ring my mam to see if everything was ok as it was such a weird thing to happen.

As some of you may know I work in molecular biology one of my colllegues is a genome specialist working in CRISPR which just been in news changing embryos to change genetic make up to prevent disease. Her husband is a vicar and she is religious which baffles me. Apart from her I know no scientist who is. It's just bollocks

I don't think you can rule anything out because nobody knows. Plenty claim to but no one actually knows.

There are some odd occurrences that are difficult to explain but I tend to only believe stuff if I see it myself or those I 100% trust so I am sceptical but I would love to believe there is something beyond the physical.

When I worked in pharma I knew a fair few people who had a strong faith which was seemingly at odds with what they were creating/destroying as part of their research. Bonkers.

I agree I just can't get my head around scientists who do this work having any faith. If your religious your holy text is right if even a bit of it is wrong e.g. Evolution it's all wrong and therefore horse shit written by goat hearders who didn't know where the sun went at night. Also funny that all the stories in bible where just around Middle East what about China where they could read and write then and documented everything

Got to agree with you  Mutley and Lightning first got me to look at this a few years back. I was a total none believer in ghosts etc but one late late night me and Mutters witnessed a black tall man? running from the trees across the road into the houses through a chained gate on the back road to Elwick. It was completely blacker than any black I have seen from head to foot everything deep deep very dark black but the moon light reflected from it as if it was polished metal. We both witnessed it from about 20 feet away as it ran in what seemed to be slow motion ( or like the clown Buzz Aldrin running on the moon ) during the moon so called landings. It never looked at us just simply ran straight across the lane ( in slow motion ) totally silent no noise from its boots or anything. It was dressed in a top hat and long tail coat ( which swayed from side to side as it moved across the lane ) and had knee length boots. From the top of the hat down to the road it looked around 7 ft tall ( so maybe 6ft) without the top hat. I spent a few days looking at what period this dress sense could be from and found only one that matched and that was a police officer around 1886. No idea why but since that sighting I not only believe Mutley and Lightning but have witnessed quite a few more ghosts in various locations since. sctatchinghead
